Tiger-free world

I love following the career of Tiger Woods. He’s great to write about, great to talk about and great to watch. But enough is enough. I’ve had two people tell me this week, it’s overkill. And I’m inclined to agree.

Enough of Tiger. We had the great weekend. Then the playoff. Then the surgery announcement. That’s enough. Let’s go free of Tiger for awhile.

I won’t write about him. I won’t talk about him on the radio. I’ll try not to think about him, though when Fred Funk and some dude from Wales are in a British Open playoff, it’s going to be tempting to wish for Tiger.

Truth is, we overinflate the interest in golf. Did you see the TV ratings for the U.S. Open, which concluded about 8 p.m. Sunday , and the Game 4 of the NBA Finals, which tipped off about 8 p.m. Sunday? Nationally, the NBA carried the day, 10.1-8.5. In the Oklahoma City market, it was 13something to 8something.

Many more people watched basketball, even though Tiger was gunning for the Open title. That surprised me and was very telling. I know it was Celtics-Lakers, but still. The NBA beat the Open virtually head to head.

So starting now, I’m going Tiger-free until further notice.

Good decision!! We, ( most of us know he is the best golfer at this time) and most of us are sick of hearing about it. When there is golf being played at any tournament, we see Tiger on the practice green. How silly is that? When his father died we heard about how it would affect him for the next year and still do from some announcers. I say, get over it. At least now we will be able to watch other players on the tour and not just follow his every move.
He may never recover, OH MY, what then? He will have to retire to Dubi with Eshback and the other people who are taking advantage of the poor from India.

Tiger Woods is the greatest golfer ever. He will have more major titles that Nicklaus, he will own the most career wins on tour and will do all of this before he is 40. I am figuring 25 majors for Tiger before he retires to Dubai. Talk about Tiger is great for most golf fans. He is going to be on the shelf for the next year and that is going to be tough on golf, especially some of his die hard fans. I’m disappointed he’s out myself. I wanted to see him win at least one more major. It’s so much fun to watch him win b/c he does things in golf that seem impossible. It’s great entertainment and it’s going to be missed by the rest of the world. His return is going to be really hyped up and if he’s out for nearly a year then I would suspect the 2009 Masters is when he returns to win his 15th major and I think that he will do it.

He’s not going to be missed by the rest of the world, only by the golf addicts who can’t fawn and genuflect enough at his gilded feet. It’s golf, for cryin’ out loud. IT’S GOLF, which is still FLOG, spelled backwards.

Never make a promise you can’t keep. He’ll find a way to sneak into your thoughts.
