Great post! Thanks for this. I love thinking about the old teams. There's no way these current teams could hang with some of those older teams. I found a pretty extensive 64-team bracket on a site. Good stuff. I found your article searching for more opinions on the best team. Nice!

If you want to check out the 64-team bracket. It’s enjoyable if nothing else: http://www.tchuddle.com/2011/04/the-greatest-ncaa-division-i-men%e2%80%99s-basketball-tournament-teams-ever-champion/

Ok, fair enough. But Larry Bird should be #5, put Bill Russell after him. Yep, splitting hairs.

Man you are an idiot, Wilt is not even close to the best player in history, hes not even the best center of all time. That'd be Kareem than maybe Shaq if he wasnt so sloppy. Oscar Robertson can't touch Jordan, he had good stats WOOHOO yeah so does LeBron James, they aren't Jordan. As far as NBA careers it goes MJ > Kobe > everyone else.

Tough to put together a list like this, but you come as close to perfection as possible, in my estimatiion. Most of these guys before the hype of TV and the likes of Dicky V. I guess I might put The Big 'O" as number 2.
I would love to see a list of the top 25 boxers of all time. If they would put Ali as number 1 or even number 10 I would be disappointed. He got beat two of three times by Ken Norton, ( in many peoples eyes) and the Liston fight? Very questionable.

Berry,

I agree with everything that you stated in this blog except for one thing. That Michael Jordan is not the greatest NBA player of all time. Wilt may have been dominating but it was in an era of smaller players. He scored 100 points in a single game and all of that but take away Jordan's years in Washington, don't count anyway b/c that was not the same player, and his scoring average is higher, he was more dominant and played during the glory days of NBA basketball where you had the best players to ever play. I am a little young to know Wilt but I saw Jordan and his all around skill is head and shoulders above that of Wilt. I'm sure we'll never agree on this subject but I will always say that the greatest NBA player of all time is Michael Jordan.
