Who to cheer for in SEC

If you’re an OU fan needing LSU to lose, here’s a mission for you. Figure out who you want to win the SEC East, since the SEC title game figures to be the only remaining hurdle for Les Miles’ Tigers. Georgia leads the SEC East at 4-2, but Tennessee controls its own destinty at 3-2. If the Vols win out, they are in the tilte game.

But Tennessee might not win out. The Vols are a little shaky. They host improving Arkansas, host instate foe Vanderbilt and go to Kentucky. My pick is UK; the Wildcats certainly are capable of knocking off Tennessee.

So if Tennessee loses, that puts Georgia back in command. The Bulldogs host Auburn and host Kentucky. Auburn is one of the world’s best road teams, so UGa could fall there. But the Sooners should want Georgia to win out. The SEC title game is in Atlanta. Atlanta is one big Georgia hotbed. The favorite football team in the Big A is not the Falcons, it’s Mark Richt’s Bulldogs.

If LSU has to play Georgia in Atlanta to reach the Big Bowl in New Orleans, that seems fair. It also seems possible that Georgia beats LSU. The Tigers have been skating by, and Georgia is getting better, witness its 42-30 pouncing of Florida a week ago.

Now, if Georgia and Tennessee both lose, then 4-3 Florida is back in it. A three-way tie between Tennessee, Florida and Georgia is possible, and I don’t know who would emerge there. They each beat one of the other, so if it then goes to divisional record, Florida likely would be your champ. Which would be all right, too. I like Florida’s chances against LSU, too. The Gators almost won in Baton Rouge. Of course, the Gators still have to go to South Carolina, where old pal Steve Spurrier awaits.

Bottom line. Whoever LSU plays in Atlanta, it won’t be easy.
