What to expect in Norman
I picked Oklahoma to beat North Texas 41-3, but I have no feel for this game, other than the Sooners will win without a sweat. But 21-3 or 61-3, I have no clue. I’m also not sure how much Sam Bradford will play. Every snap? Every snap until Blowout City in the fourth quarter? Some kind of platoon system with Kid Nichol? Some kind of platoon with Joey Halzle? I don’t know.
But I do know what Bradford should do while in the game. Throw. Throw and throw and throw. This is the easiest OU gameplan since the wishbone days. This Sooner team needs a seasoned quarterback, and this Sooner game is nothing but an exhibition to get ready for Miami. In the other scrimmages, offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson force-fed his quarterbacks. He got them as many passes as possible.
Wilson should do the same Saturday. The run game is secure. No mystery there. The Sooners have great blockers and great runners. What OU does not have is a quarterback it knows it can count on. A quarterback comfortable in the passing game. The only way to get one is to work on one. So I would fill the air with footballs Saturday night. Forget the score, forget the down and distance. Get Bradford, and maybe Nichol, too, as many looks as possible throwing the ball.
Yes, I know the coaches still are talking about Halzle as the backup, but let’s be real. If OU has to go to another quarterback, it’s got to be Nichol, doesn’t it? Does anyone really believe the Sooners can be a quality foe with Halzle as the quarterback?
