Video: Remembering George Jones
George Jones’ funeral is taking place this morning at The Grand Ole Opry House in Nashville, Tenn. As previously reported, the service is open to the public.
National television networks CMT, GAC, RFD, and FamilyNet, as well as local Nashville stations WKRN 2, WSMV 4, WTVF 5, WZTV 17 are broadcasting the funeral service live, with radio partners WSM 650AM and SiriusXM Willie’s Roadhouse (Channel 56) broadcasting the service. Fans around the world can listen online at wsmonline.com or watch online at opry.com, according to a news release.
The Country Music Hall of Famer died last Friday in Nashville at the age of 81. In the past few days, numerous country music stars and other luminaries have issued statements expressing their sorrow and condolences for his family. Pawnee-based Grammy nominee of Steve Ripley of The Tractors posted the YouTube video embedded above, featuring a young George Jones and Johnny Paycheck playing “Love Bug” on Oklahoma City’s “Mathis Bros. Country Social.”

In this Jan. 10, 2007 file photo, George Jones is shown in Nashville, Tenn. Jones, the peerless, hard-living country singer who recorded dozens of hits about good times and regrets and peaked with the heartbreaking classic “He Stopped Loving Her Today,” has died. He was 81. Jones died Friday, April 26, 2013 at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville after being hospitalized with fever and irregular blood pressure, according to his publicist Kirt Webster. (AP)
Here are some of the stars’ tributes to The Possum:
“There aren’t words in our language to describe the depth of his greatness. I’ll miss my kind and generous friend.”
— Oklahoma native Vince Gill (who will attend the funeral and then travel to Mobile, Ala., to play a fundraiser tonight)
“The greatest voice to ever grace country music will never die. Jones has a place in every heart that ever loved any kind of music.”
- Owasso resident Garth Brooks (via the Associated Press)
“I was lucky enough to be on the same label as George for a while, so I got the chance to be around him at a lot of different functions. I never got an arrogance from him or a ‘I’m George Jones.’ I don’t think he ever really understood his impact and just how great he was.”
- Owasso resident Trisha Yearwood (via Billboard)
“We’ve lost a country music legend. And I’ve lost a hero and a friend. Goodbye George Jones…”
- Tishomingo resident Blake Shelton (via Twitter)
“God bless the gift George Jones shared with us. That voice will live on forever.”
- Tishomingo resident Miranda Lambert (via Twitter)
“Happy memory of me and George. You may have left us, but your music and your legacy never will. #Legend”
- Checotah native Carrie Underwood (via Twitter)
“My prayers go out to Nancy Jones today. Her partner and husband George Jones passed this morning. We’ll miss George…”
- Oklahoma native Reba McEntire (via Twitter)
“George Jones has passed. Damn. Thought he’d live forever. Let’s break out his catalogue and play it all day Godspeed possum and family.”
- Toby Keith (via Twitter)
“God bless George Jones!”
- Former Tulsan Ronnie Dunn (via Facebook)
“We just lost one of the greatest singers on the planet,”
- Broken Arrow retro rocker JD McPherson (via Twitter)
“Such a sad say today. We lost one of the greatest country singers to ever live. Rest in peace George…”
- Thompson Square, which includes Miami, OK, native Keifer Thompson
‘We are deeply saddened by the news this morning of the passing of our friend, George Jones. Our company was privileged to have represented George Jones in the 1980’s, most notably during the critically acclaimed ‘Reunion’ tour of George Jones and Tammy Wynette. We will miss this ICONIC songwriter and his unmistakable voice, but he will live on in our hearts.’
— Jim Halsey, Tulsa-based impresario
“The greatest most soulful voice in history is gone. RIP George Jones… the guys of Restless Heart will miss you greatly.”
- Restless Heart, which includes three Oklahoma natives
“George Jones’ life is an example of so many wonderful things. How someone’s God-given gifts can make this a richer, better place. How one human being can overcome adversity, addiction, and life threatening obstacles time and time again. That it is not the stumble or fall that counts, but the willingness to stand again. How a keen sense of humor and a twinkle in a person’s eye can still prevail even after all of life’s hard knocks. How mistakes, missteps, and bad choices are not the end of the world if a person chooses to turn them into something good. And George’s life is above all the strongest example of how the love of a great woman can get a man through anything. All of this made its way beautifully into every note of the greatest voice country music will ever know. And one of the greatest friends you could ever have. We miss you already, George.”
-Brad Paisley
“If I’m blessed enough to make it there, I look forward to you giving me the grand tour. Rest in peace George Jones!!!!!”
–Keith Urban (via Twitter)
“I am deeply saddened to hear about the passing of one of my all time heroes, George Jones. Georges’ music was real and he was able to touch thousands through his songs. Not only was he a great singer, but he also had the ability to make you relate to every one of his songs, no matter who you are. He and his music will remain timeless in the world of country music. My thoughts and prayers are with his family through this difficult time.”
-Easton Corbin
“He was the greatest country vocalist that ever lived! Through the years we have all tried to emulate the passion in his voice, but no one can fill his shoes.”
- Gary LeVox of Rascal Flatts
“My heart is absolutely broken. George Jones was my all time favorite singer and one of my favorite people in the world. My heart goes out to Nancy and all his family and friends.”
— Dolly Parton
“The world has lost the greatest country singer of all time. Amen.”
— Merle Haggard
“Today is a sad day in Country music. We have lost another piece of history. George Jones was not only a good singer, but was a good friend. He will be missed by many.”
— Hank Williams Jr.
“I am very thankful I got to know George, he’s one of the greatest singers that ever lived. I actually loved the man and really enjoyed the time I got to spend with he and Nancy.”
— Randy Travis
“George Jones will always be one of the most amazing singers who ever lived. He was a true Country Music legend who made music very personal to the listener – I think more than anyone else. He will be dearly missed, but always remembered.”
— Kenny Rogers

Rascal Flatts and Journey are teaming up again this summer, with plans to co-headline a one-night only concert in Hershey, Penn., on Aug. 1 at Hersheypark Stadium. The show will go on sale Friday. The Band Perry and Cassadee Pope are the special guests.
Superstar country band Rascal Flatts, which includes Picher-bred guitarist Joe Don Rooney, and platinum-selling pop-rock band Journey, which includes Oklahoma-born guitarist Neal Schon, first performed together on the 2012 CMT Music Awards when they closed the show with the megahit “Don’t Stop Believin’.” The bands also participated in the critically-acclaimed episode of the “CMT Crossroads” series during Super Bowl XLVII.
“We had a blast performing with Journey!” said Gary LeVox, lead singer for Rascal Flatts, in a news release. “Our respect for them as musicians deepened through the television shows we did together that talk soon lead to wanting to do more. We are very excited about this concert.”
“Our most recent performances with Rascal Flatts were awesome,” added Schon in the release. “They’re great guys and great musicians, and we’re looking forward to this show.”
Rascal Flatts is the best-selling country vocal group of the past decade, and with the No. 1 debut of the trio’s latest album, “Changed,” they have the distinction of being one of only four acts to have seven consecutive studio albums debut in the top spot on the Billboard Country Albums chart during the Soundscan era. Since their musical debut in 2000, the band has sold more than 21 million albums, 25 million digital downloads and delivered 14 No. 1 singles to the top of the charts. Rascal Flatts is also the most awarded country group of the past decade, earning over 40 trophies from the American Country Awards, Academy of Country Music Awards, American Music Awards, Country Music Association, People’s Choice Awards and more.
Since its formation in 1973 in San Francisco, Journey has earned 19 Top 40 singles and 25 gold and platinum albums. The band’s “Greatest Hits” album is certified 15-times platinum, bringing Journey into the elite club of diamond-certified album holders. Journey was awarded the prestigious “Legend of Live Award” at the 2011 Billboard Touring Awards in honors of the band’ssignificant and lasting contributions to live music and the touring business, and in acknowledgement of their commitment to the fans and the art of performing live. 2011 also marked the 30th anniversary of the band’s seminal anthem, “Don’t Stop Believin’,” which was honored as the top-selling digital classic rock song in history by Nielsen SoundScan. The group received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2005.

ACM Awards preview – Interview: Oklahomans to be well represented at Sunday’s ACM Awards

Luke Bryan, left, and Blake Shelton
A version of this story appears in Friday’s Weekend Look section of The Oklahoman. To read more about the tribute to Dick Clark featuring Garth Brooks and George Strait, click here.
Oklahomans to be well represented at ACM Awards
Blake Shelton co-hosts; Garth Brooks teams for the first time with George Strait; and Shelton, Miranda Lambert, Carrie Underwood Thompson Square, Toby Keith, Vince Gill and Rascal Flatts are nominated for awards.
That’s just the way R.A. Clark, the show’s executive producer, likes it.
“Not to discount any of the other states, but a lot of great country performers come out of Oklahoma: Reba, Toby, Vince, Garth, Blake, I’m sure I’m missing a few. But I mean, there seems to be a hotbed of creativity of folks that … touch the experience of America. That, to me, comes out of those folks that come from Oklahoma. But the folks who come from Texas, I’m sure I’m gonna hear from them, or from anywhere else where the country music performers come from,” Clark said in a teleconference earlier this week.
“RAC, they’re texting right now from Texas,” Academy of Country Music CEO Bob Romeo dead-panned.
“Yeah, RAC, George Strait’s on Line 2,” cracked Jack Sussman, Executive Vice President of CBS specials and live programming.
“I just think it’s an interesting coincidence that there seems to be a lot of folks who come out of Oklahoma who rise to the forefront in country music,” Clark added, laughing.
The 48th Annual Academy of Country Music Awards will air live from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas from 7 to 10 p.m. Sunday on CBS. Shelton, his wife Miranda Lambert, Carrie Underwood, Thompson Square, Toby Keith, Vince Gill and Rascal Flatts are among the superstars with Oklahoma ties who have been nominated for ACM Awards.
In addition, Shelton, Lambert, Underwood and Brooks have been confirmed as performers for the show, and Lambert and Reba McEntire, the show’s former longtime host, have been announced as presenters.
An Ada native, Shelton will co-host for the third year, with Luke Bryan joining for his first live TV co-hosting gig.
“They have a great natural repartee. I’m so glad we have a 5-second delay because you’re never know what’s gonna happen with them,” Clark said, laughing again.
“For the record, RAC, I think it’s a little longer than 5 seconds,” Sussman said, later revealing it will be an 8-second delay. “These two guys genuinely like other, they have a great time together, and on occasion, they might forget they’re on live television,” Sussman said.
The gregarious co-hosts are unlikely to forget that Shelton and his wife of two years are making history: Romeo said as far as he knows, the Tishomingo residents are the first husband and wife in ACM history to compete for the top prize, entertainer of the year. Bryan, Jason Aldean and reigning ACM entertainer of the year Taylor Swift will compete with Shelton and Lambert for the entertainer award.
To add even more intrigue, Shelton and Lambert share a song of the year nomination for co-writing her heartbreaking ballad “Over You.”
“I can just tell you one thing about those two people, who I know very, very well. “They truly support each other and just have such great satisfaction in each other’s success. They’re two of the biggest talents in this format or any format today, and the fact that they’re married is just amazing coincidence,” Sussman said.
“I would be willing to bet that Blake or Luke will have something to say.”
A Texas native, Lambert also will compete as a recording artist for single and song of the year for “Over You” and will defend her title as female vocalist of the year. Along with their shared song of the year nod and his entertainer of the year nomination, Shelton garnered his third consecutive nomination for male vocalist of the year.
Checotah native Carrie Underwood snagged two ACM Awards nominations: for female vocalist of the year and album of the year for her 2012 release “Blown Away.”
Reigning ACM vocal duo of the year Thompson Square, comprised of Miami, OK, native Keifer Thompson and his wife Shawna, will defend the title at the 2013 awards.
Norman resident Toby Keith is nominated for male vocalist of the year, while Norman native Vince Gill shares a nomination in the vocal event of the year category with original “American Idol” winner Kelly Clarkson for their collaboration “Don’t Rush,” which she will perform on the show.
Rascal Flatts, which includes Picher-bred guitarist Joe Don Rooney, also received a nomination in the vocal event category for “Easy,” the band’s heartrending ballad with British pop singer Natasha Bedingfield.
Shelton and Lambert won’t be the only Oklahoma-Texas connection during the ACM Awards: Brooks and Texas troubadour George Strait will team up for the first time to play a special tribute to Clark’s late father, Dick Clark.
“When you talk about Garth, when you talk about Luke, you talk about Blake, you talk about Taylor, the fans find them to be real. They can relate to them,” Romeo said. “I think when people can relate to you — that artist — and their music, I think that’s what makes an artist go to that superstar level.”
