No Justice

Because of the probability of inclement weather, Saturday’s sixth annual Wormy Dog Spring Jam has been moved inside, according to WormyDog.com.

The concert typically takes place at the parking lot west of Walnut Street Bridge in Bricktown. But because of the predicted rainy weather, this year’s jam will be inside the Wormy Dog Saloon, 311 E Sheridan.

All tickets previously purchased will be honored. But since the Wormy Dog is a 21 and older venue, underage ticketholders will need to get a refund at the saloon.

The red dirt band was the Friday night headliner at the four-day Calf Fry at Tumbleweed Dance Hall. But the group’s homecoming performance went awry when Canada was struck and had to be taken to the hospital, according to the band’s Facebook.

“We’re sorry for the inconvenience and thanks for all the concern. We’ll be back to play soon,” the band wrote today on Facebook.

Miranda Lambert talks fishing, touring, ACM Awards and more before Saturday’s Calf Fry show

Miranda Lambert riding success as headlining tour heads to Stillwater

Whether striking an awards show pose in a dazzling cleavage-baring gown or cruising an Oklahoma lake in camouflage overalls, country girl Miranda Lambert knows how to haul in the big catches.

At the April 18 Academy of Country Music Awards, the star singer-songwriter personified Vegas glitz with her orange carpet arrival in a low-cut metallic sapphire Pamella Roland gown. The blond spitfire not only joined pal Carrie Underwood, Brad Paisley and rock legend John Fogerty in belting out “Travelin’ Band” during the show’s rollicking opening number, she stayed in the spotlight by performing solo and snagging three trophies.

Less than a week earlier, Lambert, a Texas native who now lives in Tishomingo, snared a massive paddlefish on Hudson Lake in northeastern Oklahoma, where her beau and fellow country singer Blake Shelton set a new lake record with his 40-pound catch on the same fishing expedition.

“There’s part of me that’s a tomboy. There’s a part of me that’s a girly-girl, too, though. But I think I can fit in with the guys,” Lambert said in a phone interview between the two big outings from Florence, Ariz., where she played the Country Thunder festival.

“We love to be outdoors, we love hunting and fishing and riding four-wheelers and just being down-to-earth and being home. … Definitely fishing and hunting are something that Blake and I share together.”

Since March, Lambert has been taking the different facets of her colorful personality, along with a revolving stable of country boys, on the road for her “Roadside Bars & Pink Guitars” tour. Her first headlining trek comes to Stillwater’s Tumbleweed Dance Hall Saturday night for the final night of the venue’s 19th annual Calf Fry.

“We’ve really changed our show. We’re doing an acoustic portion, we’re doing some new songs and some new cover songs, and just really kind of amped it up since we knew it was our headlining tour. I’m happier than ever to be out on the road, and I think it shows. So I think people’ll have a good time,” Lambert said.

After touring with country superstars like Paisley and Kenny Chesney, the singer-songwriter felt ready to step into the headliner role in support of her critically acclaimed third album “Revolution.”

“It was a little scary at first ‘cause I wasn’t sure how the turnout was going to be, and … it was like the pressure’s all on us now. But it’s been awesome,” she said.

“It kind of shows that you’re moving up a level. We’ve been out for five years now on other people’s tours and it’s just nice to be able to like put to the test everything we’ve learned and do it on our own.”

Since she has opened for so many superstar men in the course of her career, Lambert, 26, recruited a pack of talented country guys to take turns warming up her crowds. Among her openers are Oklahoma-Texas band Cross Canadian Ragweed, James Otto, David Nail, Randy Houser, Eric Church, Jake Owen, Luke Bryan and Chris Young. Fellow Texas native Wade Bowen will open her Calf Fry show, while Ragweed will headline the “Testicle Festival” tonight.

“There’s a bunch of great male acts, and I just thought it would be a cool dynamic,” she said. “I think a lot of guys are more likely to come see guys and the girls are more likely to come see a girl. … I love the music of all the guys that are out with us.”

With her recent successes, Lambert has become a key player in a shifting dynamic in country music. She recently notched her first No. 1 single with the wily cheating song “White Liar,” and she is set to play both the huge Bonnaroo Music Festival and Lilith Fair this year.

Along with Shelton, Bryan and trio Lady Antebellum, she represents a new generation of country stars who maintain close friendships even as they vie for chart position. These young guns dominated the ACM Awards. cheering each other to victory in several categories.

The members of Lady A, who befriended Lambert last summer on Chesney’s tour, said in interviews they were rooting for their pal’s “Revolution” to win album of the year over their own self-titled debut. The trio traveled last year to Tishomingo for a songwriting confab with Shelton and Lambert, which yielded Lambert’s “Revolution” cut “Love Song.”

Along with the album of the year title, Lambert also earned top female vocalist and video of the year for “White Liar.” Rotating tender ballads and feisty anthems, “Revolution” became her second ACM album of the year; she won the trophy in 2008 with “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend.”

“It’s really nerve wracking every time you put out an album because you’re just hoping that people love it as much as you do. ‘Revolution’ really I took a lot of time off and stayed at the farm and wrote for the record and took a lot of time and concentrated on what I wanted to say. So this is the thing I’m most proud of musically,” she said.

“It really is a part of who I am. You know, I’m very honest in this record and in my music period. So I feel like when people accept that, they accept me.”

Miranda Lambert announces openers for headlining tour; Wade Bowen to play Stillwater date at Tumbleweed

Miranda Lambert (Photo by Bryan Terry/The Oklahoman Archives)

Tishomingo resident and country music star Miranda Lambert embarks on her “Roadside Bars & Pink Guitars” headlining tour next week, and for all but a handful of dates, she’s enlisted for her opening slots some of the hottest male talents in country music – Oklahoma-Texas band Cross Canadian Ragweed, James Otto, David Nail, Randy Houser,  Eric Church, Jake Owen, Wade Bowen, Luke Bryan and Chris Young. Each will join Lambert for select dates through out the tour.

Lambert will bring the tour to the legendary Tumbleweed Dance Hall in Stillwater on May 1 with Texas country-rocker Wade Bowen as the opener.

With her sharp-tongued, no-holds barred attitude, incendiary stage performances, and gun-toting anthems, platinum-selling recording artist Lambert is a force to be reckoned with in country music – a woman most men would think twice about double-crossing. Her recent No. 1 hit “White Liar,” along with hits like “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend,” “Gunpowder & Lead” and “Kerosene,” leave no question that the gal can hold her own. But there’s a new breed of rough and rowdy country artists who think they are man enough to keep up the Texas native, who recently earned six Academy of Country Music Award nominations.

“I like pink guitars and puppies so how scary can I be?” Lambert says in a news release. “Seriously, it’s going to be a lot of fun. I’ve been on tour with some great male headliners, so I thought it’s only natural that I invite some talented guys on my first official headlining tour!”

Grady Cross, guitarist with Oklahoma-grown band Cross Canadian Ragweed, expresses his enthusiasm for touring with Lambert in the release.

“We’re excited to join Miranda for a few dates on her upcoming tour,” Cross said. “It’s been about five years since we’ve performed with her and we’re proud to be back. Miranda is a great entertainer and its guaranteed to be a good time!”

Bowen adds in the release, “Miranda has always been one of the most confident women I’ve been around. It seems she always has her head in the game and ready for the next step before she even knows what that might be. Her music is original and unique without sticking herself under the radar and with every album release, I find myself anxious to see what she is going to do next. Not many artists have that effect on people anymore!”

According to Young, “Miranda is one of the most talented singer/songwriters out there. I have always loved her music and her live shows, and I’m very excited about being on the road with her.”

And Owen says in the release: “I can’t wait to get out on the road with Miranda. She and her band know how to rock and our show is a perfect fit with that. Her fans are always ready to have a good time and we’re ready to show them a party.”

Church adds: “Miranda and I both have a lot of respect for each other musically. I consider her a bada– and she considers me one. Put us both together and it should be unsafe at best. Everybody better rest up for this one cause we’re gonna blow it up.”

Miranda’s newest single “The House that Built Me,” a song that showcases her softer, sentimental side, became the No. 1 most-added song this week at more than 100 country radio stations. With six 2010 ACM nominations, a newly celebrated gold certification of both her first No. 1 single, “White Liar,” and her critically acclaimed third studio album, “Revolution,” and her first headlining tour, Lambert is laying a strong foundation in becoming country music’s next big superstar.

More information about Lambert’s openers is posted after the break.

Country Fever festival idled for 2010, Rocklahoma and Bikelahoma on for this year

Festival organizers have announced that Country Fever, the outdoor country music event near Pryor, will idle in 2010 “amidst a challenging economy.”

The festival, established in 2003,  will “take a year off in order to re-assess the direction of the event,” according to a news release.

“We’ve had tremendous success with Country Fever over the years, and we thought long and hard about continuing in some fashion this year, as well,” said Mark Nuessle, festival co-organizer and president of the Catch the Fever festival site, in the release. “But in listening to our long-standing customers and watching the slowly recovering economy, the Country Fever partners and I agreed that our best move was to wait until 2011.”

According to the release, Country Fever has faced open challenges in the last few years with shrinking attendance, lessening sponsor commitments due to the economic climate, and increasing artist performance fees. All of these things, combined with the very real financial hardships facing a majority of the festival’s fans, led to the decision.

“The Country Fever ‘die-hards’ have been so incredibly supportive over the last seven years, and this is one of the hardest decisions we’ve ever had to make since creating this festival. And in the end, our only hope is that those loyal friends and will understand why we made this choice and will be back to support us next year,” Nuessle said in the release.

In the past few years, big-name country stars including Oklahomans Toby Keith, Reba McEntire and duo Brooks & Dunn (which includes former Tulsan Ronnie Dunn) have played Country Fever. Last year, the festival went with an an all-red dirt lineup including Cross Canadian Ragweed, Stoney LaRue and Robert Earl Keen.

I was only able to attend the opening day, a Thursday, of the festival last year, but attendance was noticeably sparse. Even during Keen’s closing set for the night, only a smattering of fans took to the the sprawling grounds that hot evening in June. I also heard reports of slim attendance for the rest of the event.

According to the release, Catch The Fever Festivals have regrouped and teamed up with AEG Live this year.

“We’ve been fortunate enough to begin work recently with an outside company to begin to re-tool our other festivals to be formidable events for years to come,” said Dave Gienke, festival co-organizer and director of Country Fever’s operations, in the release. “Our belief is that we will do the same with Country Fever and return in 2011 with an amazing lineup, an incredible slate of sponsors, and a country festival experience that will be like no other!”

People who have purchased pre-sale tickets to Country Fever 2010 are asked to visit www.feverfest.com for information, or call the venue’s box office at (918) 824-2288 or toll free at (866) 310-2288 to request a refund or to exchange them for other Catch The Fever festivals.

Bikelahoma 2010 is set for May 21-23. The Rocklahoma rock festival, with a lineup expanded beyond just ’80s “hair bands” is set for Memorial Day weekend, May 28-30.

UPDATE: Since this story was written Tuesday afternoon, country singer-songwriter Miranda Lambert, who lives in Tishomingo, has been added to the Bonnaroo lineup.

The Flaming Lips, Kings of Leon, Cross Canadian Ragweed and Miranda Lambert are among the artists with Oklahoma ties that have been confirmed for the ginormous Bonnaroo 2010 music festival.

Rolling Stone reports that the lineup for Bonnaroo has been slowly announced throughout the day and also includes Jay-Z, Dave Matthews Band, Weezer, Jeff Beck, Jeff Fogerty, OK Go, She & Him, They Might Be Giants, Zac Brown Band and more.

Bonnaroo 2010 will be June 10-13 in Manchester, Tenn.

In a show configuration that should sound familiar to Oklahoma fans, frontman Wayne Coyne tells Rolling Stone that the Lips will play a midnight set the first day of Bonnaroo, starting with a performance of their own material followed by their live cover of Pink Floyd’s seminal album “The Dark Side of the Moon” in its entirety.

The Oklahoma City-based Lips performed “Dark Side” live for the first time in full in a similar setup at their third annual New Year’s Eve Freakout this year in Oklahoma City.
