New releases for Feb. 12, 2013: Documentary “Bully,” featuring three Oklahoma families, debuts on DVD

The critically acclaimed and critically important documentary “Bully” debuted on DVD today.

During the 2009-2010 school year, director Lee Hirsch followed five families affected by adolescent bullying, including two in Oklahoma: Kirk and Laura Smalley of Perkins struggle with heartbreaking loss their 11-year-old son commits suicide after being tormented by bullies.

Oklahoma country music stars Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert and the affecting documentary “Bully” are among the nominees for the 2012 Do Something Awards.

Shelton and Lambert, who make their home in Tishomingo, are nominated for Do Something Couple for staging a benefit concert that raised $70,000 for a veteran’s program and an animal shelter in the Oklahoma town.

“Bully” filmmakers launch “The Bully Project: 1 Million Kids” to get schoolkids free access to the film

The filmmakers of “Bully,” a documentary distributed by The Weinstein Company, have announced the launch of “The Bully Project: 1 Million Kids,” a collaborative national education initiative that fosters sustainable bullying prevention.

The goal is to help inspire change in schools by providing free access to the movie in theaters within an educational framework, according to a news release.

NEW YORK – Lee Hirsch, director of the powerful documentary “Bully,” was honored Wednesday night at The National Center for Learning Disabilities’ 35th annual benefit dinner at the Mandarin Oriental hotel.

During remarks, Hirsch urged Americans to move from awareness to action, citing an anti-bullying toolkit just introduced by NCLD that gives children, parents and educators immediate means to open dialogues and help save lives.
