Ronnie Dunn, Lady Antebellum, Tim McGraw and more to play storm-relief concert special, airing May 12

Ronnie Dunn

Tornado Relief Concert Hosted by Reba McEntire and Blake Shelton Durant, OK

CMT and its pro-social initiative CMT One Country will air a live, 90-minute concert special featuring former Tulsan Ronnie Dunn, Hank Williams Jr. and Alabama, Keith Urban, Lady Antebellum, Sara Evans, Tim McGraw and many others to raise awareness and funds for those affected by the recent devastating storms, flooding and tornadoes.

The fundraising special will air live from Nashville, Tenn., at 8 p.m. Thursday, May 12 on CMT and will be simulcast on CMT.com. Additional artists to be announced; all money raised will benefit the American Red Cross Disaster Relief efforts.

Hank Williams, Jr. got the ball rolling on the fundraising event this past weekend when he reached out to CMT to express his urgent desire to address the disaster: “I just couldn’t believe what I was seeing on TV. Alabama is home – I am really pumped about helping. I want to raise a lot of money, and thanks to my good friends, we are going to be able to make a difference,” he said in a news release.

“CMT’s audience is reaching out to us, and to our stars, in desperation,” said Brian Philips, president of CMT in the release. “The other seismic news events of the past few days have had the unintended effect of limiting media coverage of this massive, historic American disaster. Simply put, CMT and our artists will not allow this to happen. We will raise money, and we will shine the brightest possible light on the urgent needs of our courageous neighbors. On behalf of CMT, MTV Networks and Viacom, we strongly urge other organizations to join us in this labor of love.”

“Our hearts go out to every person affected by these storms, and we’re grateful for every donation that enables the Red Cross to do whatever we possibly can do to ease their suffering and give them help,” said Gail McGovern, president and CEO of the American Red Cross, in the release.

CMT One Country encourages the public to support our neighbors affected by the recent devastating tornadoes and floods by texting “REDCROSS” to 90999 to make a $10 donation to support the American Red Cross Disaster Relief efforts.

As previously announced here, Oklahoma country music superstars Reba McEntire and Blake Shelton will play and host a home-state “Tornado Relief Concert” Thursday, May 26 at the Choctaw Event Center in Durant. Former Tulsan Ronnie Dunn, Martina McBride, Dierks Bentley, Thompson Square, Colt Ford and Jennette McCurdy will debut new music videos during CMT’s Big New Music Weekend Friday-Sunday on the cable channel and CMT.com.

Dunn’s “Bleed Red” is the lead single from his upcoming solo album, due June 7. The soulful anthem is an impressive post-Brooks & Dunn debut with one of the singer’s best vocal performances in a long time.

If you want to see him live, Dunn will perform May 7 at WinStar World Casino in Thackerville.

On TV, Dunn and McBride will be featured on the “Girls’ Night Out: Superstar Women of Country” TV special airing at 8 p.m. Friday on CBS.

McBride’s “Teenage Daughters” is her first single since joining the Republic Nashville roster.

Bentley’s “Am I the Only One” comes from his upcoming album; Thompson Square’s “I Got You” is a follow-up to their No. 1 hit, “Are You Gonna Kiss Me or Not”; and Ford’s “Country Thang” is included on his next project, “Every Chance I Get,” due May 3.

McCurdy’s “Generation Love” comes from the “iCarly” TV star’s upcoming country debut; she has been doing a nationwide mall tour to promote the new song, with proceeds from single CD sales going to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. If McCurdy can harness the kind of impressive crowd power she generated last week during her stop at Oklahoma City’s Quail Springs Mall, she should have a bright future as a contemporary country artist.

· Tishomingo resident Miranda Lambert, who will be recognized for being the only female artist in the academy’s history to ever win Album of the Year twice, first for “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” in 2007 and again for “Revolution” in 2009.

· Chockie native Reba, who will be recognized for winning Female Vocalist of the Year seven times—more than any other artist in the academy’s history.

· Checotah native Carrie Underwood, who will be recognized for being the only female artist in the academy’s history to ever win Entertainer of the Year twice, first in 2008 and again in 2009 (she is the reigning Entertainer of the Year, since awards recognize the previous calendar year’s work).

· The Judds, who will be recognized for being the ACM’s most award-winning female duo, having won Vocal Duo of the Year seven years in a row, 1984-90, and Song of the Year in 1984 for “Why Not Me.”

· Loretta Lynn, who will be recognized for her amazing 50-year career as a leading female artist in country music, which includes being the only female artist recognized by the academy as Artist of the Decade, Entertainer of the Year and Female Vocalist of the Year four times.

· Martina McBride, who will be recognized by ACM Lifting Lives for her dedication to raising social consciousness through songs such as “Independence Day” and “Concrete Angel,” which raise awareness of domestic violence and encourage female empowerment. McBride has won Female Vocalist of the Year three times (2001, 2002 and 2003).

· Jennifer Nettles, who will be recognized for being one of only two female artists in the Academy’s history to ever solo write and perform Song of the Year, in 2007, with “Stay.”

Tishomingo resident and country music star Miranda Lambert, who plays in Norman tonight at OU’s Lloyd Noble Center, followed up her domination of Sunday’s Academy of Country Music Awards in Las Vegas with Monday’s taping of “ACM Presents Girls’ Night Out: Superstar Women of Country.” The concert special also honored Oklahoma natives Carrie Underwood and Reba McEntire, Martina McBride, Jennifer Nettles of Sugarland, Loretta Lynn and The Judds.

Several of the event’s performers have Oklahoma ties, including Lambert’s fiance Blake Shelton, Vince Gill, Ronnie Dunn and Rascal Flatts (which includes Picher-bred guitarist Joe Don Rooney).

Here are a few photos from the big event, and I’ll post more on April 22, the day the special will air on CBS. The Associated Press’ Chris Talbott had this report on the “Girls’ Night Out” taping:

LAS VEGAS – It took Miranda Lambert no time at all to name her favorite performance during the taping of “ACM Presents Girls’ Night Out: Superstar Women of Country.”

“My favorite part of the night was Carrie Underwood,” Lambert said. “She brought the house down.”

A day after her sizzling performance with Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler at The Academy of Country Music Awards, Underwood was at it again Monday night during a tribute to some of the iconic women of the genre that will air April 22 on CBS. She teamed with Vince Gill on “How Great Thou Art,” bringing the crowd to its feet yet again with a soaring, pitch-perfect vocal.

“I love being able to do different dynamic things,” Underwood said “… Those rare moments when you get to do something that’s unexpected or out of the blue, that’s where creativity comes out when you put yourself in that one moment.”

The academy saluted Underwood, Lambert, Loretta Lynn, Reba McEntire, The Judds, Sugarland’s Jennifer Nettles and Martina McBride with another round of interesting combinations.

Rascal Flatts serenaded Reba, John Fogerty saluted The Judds, Ronnie Dunn joined Nettles, Little Big Town sang for McBride and Blake Shelton performed for Lambert, his fiance.

Former Tulsan Ronnie Dunn perform.

Lambert admitted to getting misty during Shelton’s performance of her song “Famous in a Small Town.”

“I almost cried the whole time,” she said. “Everybody’s tribute was really emotional because it was really cool to celebrate women.”

After a video tribute and performance, each singer got up for a song. Reba kicked things off by joining Rascal Flatts on “The Heart Won’t Lie.”

“I love the fact that she isn’t afraid to take chances on songs,” Rascal Flatts guitarist Joe Don Rooney said. “She has cut all kinds of different styles of songs and she owned them.”

Dunn and Nettles performed “Let Him Fly” together, Little Big Town and McBride teamed on “When Will I Be Loved,” Lambert put together a band, Pistol Annie, with Ashley Monroe and Angaleena Presley to perform “Hell on Heels” and Wynonna joined Fogerty on a powerful version of “Proud Mary” as Naomi watched from the side of the stage where she danced and took a picture during the Creedence Clearwater Revival icon’s guitar solo.

“I love her voice. She kills,” Fogerty said. “Like the song of The Judds that I sing by myself, listening to her performance on that record, ‘Rockin’ with the Rhythm of the Rain,’ she does things on purpose with the changes in her voice, it’s like a guitar player bending notes or something. It’s cool.”

Other performers included Jason Aldean, The Band Perry, the JaneDear girls and Sara Evans.

The night’s honorees gathered on stage after their tributes to sing “Coal Miner’s Daughter” for Lynn, who was scheduled to appear but had to cancel because she’s recovering from knee surgery. Lynn did appear in a taped message from her home in Hurricane Mills, Tenn.

“Such a sistership,” Wynonna Judd said of the gathering. “Women bond in a way that’s very sacred. I look at Loretta up there, who’s the reason I’m in country music. We stand on her shoulders. And looking at Carrie and Miranda and Jennifer and thinking this is the next generation, and I’m just in a surreal place that’s between worlds.”
