Blake Shelton and The Band Perry to join Glen Campbell for special Grammy performance

Blake Shelton

The Band Perry

Glen Campbell

Recording Academy Lifetime Achievement Award recipient and five-time Grammy winner Glen Campbell — currently on the road for his “Goodbye Tour” — will join current Grammy nominees The Band Perry and Blake Shelton, who lives in Tishomingo, for a special performance on the 54th Annual Grammy Awards.

Hosted by two-time Grammy Award winner and “NCIS: Los Angeles” star LL Cool J, the Grammy Awards take place live from the Staples Center in Los Angeles on Sunday, Feb. 12, 2012 on the CBS Television Network.

Shelton. an Ada native, is nominated for two awards: Best Country Solo Performance for “Honey Bee” and Best Country Album for “Red River Blue.” Also, his chart-topping rendition of “God Gave Me You,” written by contemporary Christian singer Dave Barnes, also earned a nod for best country song, an award presented to songwriters.

The Band Perry is nominated for Best New Artist.

A member of the Country Music Hall of Fame, Campbell announced in 2011 that he had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and released his swan song album, “Ghost on the Canvas.” Before he was the “Rhinestone Cowboy” hitmaker, Campbell was part of The Wrecking Crew, a group of top-notch session players who performed on myriad albums in the 1960s.

As part of The Wrecking Crew, Campbell played on Frank Sinatra’s “Strangers in the Night,” the Righteous Brothers’ “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’,” the Monkees’ “Last Train to Clarksville” and many other hits across multiple genres.

In the late ’60s and early ’70s, Campbell became a huge and influential country music star, and his country-pop sound helped usher the format into the mainstream. Several of his biggest hits in that era, including “By the Time I Get to Phoenix,” “Wichita Lineman” and “Galveston,” came from the pen of songwriting star and Elk City native Jimmy Webb.

Shelton and Webb performed “Wichita Lineman” in 2007 during the Oklahoma Centennial Spectacular concert.

Previously announced performers for the 54th Annual Grammy Awards include current Grammy nominees Jason Aldean and Kelly Clarkson, Coldplay and Rihanna, Foo Fighters, Bruno Mars, Paul McCartney, Nicki Minaj and Taylor Swift.

Shelton, Aldean, The Band Perry and Minaj will perform on the Grammy broadcast for the first time, while Clarkson, Coldplay, Foo Fighters, Mars, McCartney, Rihanna and Swift are returning to the Grammy stage.

LL Cool J has hosted “The Grammy Nominations Concert Live! – Countdown to Music’s Biggest Night” since its inception in December 2008. This is his first time hosting the annual Grammy Awards broadcast.

Additional performers, presenters and special segments will be announced soon.

Oscar nominations: “Hugo” and “The Artist,” love letters to movies, lead nominees

The conventional wisdom that Hollywood loves movies about movies was proven true this morning as nominations for the 2012 Academy Awards were announced.

Martin Scorsese’s first 3-D film, “Hugo,” leads all contenders with 11 nominations, including best picture and best director.

Close behind is the black-and-white mostly silent film “The Artist,” a critical darling that receive 10 nods, including best picture, director for French filmmaker Michel Hazanavicius, best actor for Jean Dujardin and supporting actress for Berenice Bejo.

The Academy again tweaked the rules for the number of best picture nominees, allowing anywhere from five to 10 films to earn nods. Nine movies ended with best picture nominations: “Hugo,” “The Artist” (which won the best picture, musical or comedy, at the Golden Globes), “The Descendants” (which won the best picture, drama, Globe), “Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close,” “The Help,” “Midnight in Paris,” Moneyball,” “The Tree of Life” and “War Horse.”

While the Oscar nominations mostly followed expectations, there were a few surprises and more than a few notable, irritating snubs:

- Melissa McCarthy garnered a best supporting actress nomination for her turn in the raunchy comedy “Bridesmaids.” Unfortunately, Carey Mulligan (a 2009 best actress nominee for “An Education”) didn’t get a nomination for either of her great performances in “Drive” and “Shame.” Bérénice Bejo, “The Artist”; Jessica Chastain and Octavia Spencer, “The Help”; and Janet McTeer, “Albert Nobbs,” round out the category.

- Speaking of “Drive,” director Nicolas Winding Refn’s great neo-noir tale got alarmingly little love, with its sole nomination coming in the sound editing category. The snub is particularly egregious considering how widely celebrated Albert Brooks’ supporting turn as a ruthless mobster has been this season.

- Steven Spielberg’s first motion-capture animated movie, “The Adventures of Tintin,” was snubbed in the best animated film category, even though it won the Golden Globe in the animated category and was a favorite animated pick among many critics’ groups. The Academy continues to show an utter inability to grasp motion-capture animation, which is emerging as an important medium in the art of filmmaking. Not only did “Tintin” get left out of the animated category, Andy Serkis again failed to get any credit for another strong mo-cap performance, this time as Caesar, the chimpanzee leader of the uprising in “Rise of the Planet of the Apes.”

- Although Rooney Mara got a best actress nod for her transformative performance in David Fincher’s “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo,” Tilda Swinton’s acclaimed turn in the harrowing “We Need to Talk about Kevin” was left out of that race. Fincher also got snubbed for best director despite his excellent work adapting the late Stieg Larsson’s global best-seller.

- Michael Fassbender’s harrowing turn in the sexual addiction drama “Shame” failed to earn him a berth in the best actor competition. Demián Bichir, who hadn’t received much attention this awards season, got a nomination for the immigrant tale “A Better Life.” Also, Gary Oldman received his long-awaited first-ever Oscar nod for his lead turn in the spy saga “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.” The other nominees in the category are George Clooney, “The Descendants”; Jean Dujardin, “The Artist”; and Brad Pitt, “Moneyball.”

- Between his writer-director efforts in “The Ides of March” and starring role in “The Descendants,” George Clooney was expected and did reaffirm his status as a Hollywood power broker. But his Shawnee-born pal Brad Pitt also emerged as a power player: Pitt not only earned his third nomination in an acting category, as a producer, he has two movies in the best picture hunt: “Moneyball” and “Tree of Life,” directed by former Bartlesville resident Terrence Malick.

The Oscars will be handed out at 6 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 26 and air live on ABC.

Listen: Thompson Square releases “Glass” as new single

Lady Antebellum With Special Guests Darius Rucker and Thompson Square Tulsa, OK

Hot country duo Thompson Square – Miami, OK, native Keifer Thompson and wife Shawna – are releasing the fragile ballad “Glass” as the third single from their smash self-titled debut album.

The love song puts Shawna Thompson’s vocals, which are very vulnerable and soft, in the forefront, and in an interview this morning, Keifer told me that was a big factor in their decision to make it the next single.

The duo has been busy tour and racking up awards and accolades over the past year and haven’t had many chances to play Keifer’s home state. But they’re rectifying that in first few months of 2012, with three planned tour dates in the Sooner State.

Thompson Square will open for Lady Antebellum Jan. 27 at Tulsa’s BOK Center (that’s the first stop of Lady A’s new leg of their “Own the Night” tour) and April 7 at Norman’s Lloyd Noble Center. For more information, go to www.thompsonsquare.com.

The duo also will headline Buffalo Run Casino in Keifer’s hometown of Miami on Feb. 17. For more information, go to www.buffalorun.com.

In addition, Thompson Square are among the eight semi-finalists for its ACM New Artist of the Year.

The ACM is inviting fans to vote to help pare the semi-finalists to three nominees. The final three nominees will be announced in February and will move on to compete for ACM New Artist of the Year, which will be announced live April 1 during the 47th Annual ACM Awards, co-hosted by Oklahoma country stars Blake Shelton and Reba McEntire and airing on CBS.

Fans  can vote on the ACM New Artist of the Year semi-finalists once a day through noon Eastern/11 a.m. Central Jan. 30 at GACTV.com.

Look for my new feature on Thompson Square next week before the Jan. 27 Tulsa show. And check out the couple performing “Glass” live in this video:

“The Artist,” “The Descendants” win big at the Golden Globes

The cast and crew of the film "The Artist" poses backstage with the award for Best Motion Picture - Comedy or Musical during the 69th Annual Golden Globe Awards Sunday, Jan. 15, 2012, in Los Angeles. From left are Thomas Langmann and Uggie the dog, Jean Dujardin, Michel Hazanavicius, Berenice Bejo and Penelope Ann Miller. (AP photo)

Since the Golden Globes were handed out Sunday in Beverly Hills, Calif., the consensus among the pundits has become clear: The Oscars are now a two-picture race between “The Artist” – which won the Globe for best picture, musical or comedy – and “The Descendants” – which won the final award of the night, best picture, drama.

That consensus becomes even louder since “The Descendants” star George Clooney won for best actor, drama, while “The Artist’s” Jean Dujardin – with the help of his adorable co-star and dog Uggie – won best actor, musical or comedy.

Of course, it’s necessary to take this notion of a two-movie race with the proverbial grain of salt, since award seasons watchers typically want to ramp up the Oscar drama by turning the competition into a battle of two favorites – and the more opposite the two films in question, the better. Remember last year when it was all about “The King’s Speech” vs. “The Social Network”? Or 2010 when it the battle of the exes between Kathryn Bigelow’s “The Hurt Locker” and James Cameron’s “Avatar”?

To me, “The Artist” seems to be the real best picture favorite going into this year’s Oscars; like “The King’s Speech,” it’s even achieved the obligatory Oscar backlash for being too Oscar-y. Since “The Artist” was my favorite film of 2011, I’m hopeful it will do well on Oscar night. But I’m also a big fan of the “The Descendants” – which narrowly missed my top 10 list, mostly because of the cloying voiceover in the first third or so of the movie – and particularly of its charming star.

My sense is that the 2012 Oscars may most closely mirror the 2009 Academy Awards, when “Slumdog Millionaire” earned eight statuettes, including best picture, but none of the acting prizes, which allowed the voters to spread the love to other movies.

The Oscars will air at 6 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 26 on ABC.
