OKC Improv starts spring 2013 season Saturday

okc improv spring 2013

OKC Improv will tickle the city’s funny bone with a spring run of unscripted comedy shows, every Saturday starting this week through April 27, with bonus shows on Friday, April 12, and Friday, April 19. Show times are at 8 and 10 p.m. at the Reduxion Broadway Theater, 1613 N Broadway Ave.

“Improv is a one-of-a-kind experience because each show is made up on the spot. You’ll never see the same show twice,” said Buck Vrazel, artistic director of OKC Improv, in a news release.

With eight performances in the spring run, metro audiences have multiple opportunities to discover the exhilarating thrill of live, unscripted comedy.

“With improvised stories and musicals, I love sharing the thrill of discovery with the audience. The audience’s participation is a dynamic part of improvisation. Everyone gets to be part of the show. And that is truly unique,” said Cristela Carrizales, president of OKC Improv, in the release.

More than 20 improv troupes will perform during the spring run of shows. Audiences will enjoy everything from live movie satires and silent mime comedy to theme-based scenes from all-female troupe the MiDolls and epic rap battles from troupe Twinprov.

The spring lineup will include established favorites, new projects and a full-length improvised romantic comedy. Plus, comedy fans will enjoy musicals created in an instant, improvised Shakespeare and “Star Wars.”

Show prices for the 8 p.m. shows are $15 and $12 for the 10 p.m. Tickets can be purchased online at www.okcimprov.com. Shows regularly sell out, so advance ticket purchases are encouraged.

Since 2009, OKC Improv has been entertaining and delighting local audiences with dynamic improvisation and sketch comedy shows. Oklahoma’s improv scene has exploded in growth, from five performing groups in 2009 to more than 40 today.

Troupes from Norman, Tulsa, Tahlequah, Missouri, Texas, and, of course, OKC locals, are featured on the spring schedule.

OKC Improv is a nonprofit community arts organization dedicated to building a thriving improv scene by providing performance opportunities for area improvisers and by raising awareness and understanding of improv as an art form through outreach and education.
