Wednesday Video Spotlight: Three Oklahoma artists step into “Momentum” Spotlight

Momentum: Art Doesn't Stand Still Oklahoma City, OK

Oklahoma City Fairs & Festivals on wimgo

Art lovers can get on the move with Oklahoma’s young artistic talent at the 12th annual “Momentum: Art Doesn’t Stand Still,” Friday and Saturday at 50 Penn Place, 1900 Northwest Expressway.

Presented by the Oklahoma Visual Arts Coalition, “Momentum” offers Oklahoma artists ages 30 and younger an opportunity to exhibit their work in a venue created specifically for them. The interactive event presents a diversified look at Oklahoma’s young artistic talent. Each year, hundreds of young artists submit their work to be considered for the exhibition. Guest curators narrow submissions to the best-of-the-best for the two-night event.

Erin Latham of Norman is one of the three 2013 "Momentum" Spotlight artists.

Erin Latham of Norman is one of the three 2013 “Momentum” Spotlight artists.

“It’s the only program that we have that is specifically for young artists and that was created out of a need that we saw for young artists to gain some experience showing their work,” speaking to the public about their work, entering and going through the process of a juried exhibition,” OVAC Associate Director Kelsey Karper told me in an interview. “These are all things that artists need to have experience doing in order to move their career forward, so ‘Momentum’ was created to help them kind of get their foot in the door.”The multimedia exhibit launches Friday and Saturday with a two-night celebration at 50 Penn Place. Friday night’s “Momentum: Downtempo” will have a mellower vibe and feature live music from local bands Fifth Fret, Erik the Viking, and R.e.A.L. On Saturday, “Momentum: Full Speed” will offer a louder, faster-paced experience with music from Em and the Mother Superiors, Wurly Birds and Kali Ra.“Momentum” continues with free gallery hours from 5 to 7 p.m. March 5-7.

In addition to the 57 artists selected for the exhibition, three more artists were chosen to receive “Momentum” Spotlight commissions of $2,000 and three months of guidance from the curators. The Spotlight artists – Matthew Kaney of Norman, Erin Latham of Norman, and Zachary Presley of Durant – have created new artwork just for Momentum. Curators PLUG Projects and Taryn Chubb will work with the three Spotlight artists to refine their projects for Momentum. PLUG Projects is a curatorial collaborative made up of five artists from Kansas City, MO. Chubb, selected as Momentum Emerging Curator, is Assistant Professor and Gallery Director in the Art Department at East Central University in Ada.

Latham’s immersive installation will take viewers to a new environment, creating a sea kelp forest from printed and meticulously hand-cut recycled paper. Presley, a Chickasaw artist, is planning a performance that takes on stereotypes associated with Native Americans.

Kaney’s project invites attendees to play arcade-style video games rich in social commentary.

“It can get you playing as this rich person or this drone pilot in a flippant or kind of trivial way. I think it makes you perform this action … because it’s a game and, you know, you gotta get the most points. But then hopefully at some point you’re thinking ‘What is the ethics of what I’m actually performing here?’ That, I think, is how a lot of satire functions,” Kaney told me in a recent interview.

To read more of my “Momentum” preview feature, click here, and in this Wednesday Video Spotlight, Kaney, Latham and Presley talk about their “Momentum” Spotlight projects.

A version of this story appears in Wednesday’s Life section of The Oklahoman.

“Momentum” showcases young Oklahoma artists
The 12th annual exhibition, organized by the Oklahoma Visual Arts Coalition, opens Friday and Saturday and features 76 diverse artworks by 57 artists ages 30 and younger.

As far as Matthew Kaney is concerned, video games aren’t just for entertainment anymore.

The University of Oklahoma senior also considers them a prime medium for artistic expression.

“I think video games work well for satire — or can work well — first all, because they’re so appealing. It’s sort of a nice way to package up one of these ideas that’s otherwise complex or hard or depressing or kind of frustrating to think about,” he said.

“It can get you playing as this rich person or this drone pilot in a flippant or kind of trivial way. I think it makes you perform this action … because it’s a game and, you know, you gotta get the most points. But then hopefully at some point you’re thinking ‘What is the ethics of what I’m actually performing here?’ That, I think, is how a lot of satire functions.”

One of the three Spotlight artists at this year’s “Momentum: Art Doesn’t Stand Still,” Kaney, 23, of Norman has created three arcade-style games with pointed social messages: “Trickle Down,” in which wealthy executives try to stay rich by catching falling bags of money; “Drone Strike,” a “scrolling shooter” game in which users pilot an unmanned military drone but the instructions are on a different screen from the action; and “Made in China,” an “exercise in monotony” in which players portray a young assembly line worker and repeat the same button presses to manufacture consumer electronics.

“I think that artists are really only now kind of figuring out some of the potential here,” said the Tahlequah native. “I’m dealing with all the same considerations as a big video game studio: I am interested in how the graphics look, I’m interested in the game play and all of that. But my motives are definitely different and I think that bears out in the final piece.”

Youth showcase

In its 12th year, “Momentum” features works by Oklahoma artists 30 and younger. It is one of the Oklahoma Visual Arts Coalition’s biggest events of the year.

“It’s the only program that we have that is specifically for young artists and that was created out of a need that we saw for young artists to gain some experience showing their work,” speaking to the public about their work, entering and going through the process of a juried exhibition,” said OVAC Associate Director Kelsey Karper. “These are all things that artists need to have experience doing in order to move their career forward, so ‘Momentum’ was created to help them kind of get their foot in the door.”

The multimedia exhibit launches Friday and Saturday with a two-night celebration at 50 Penn Place. Friday night’s “Momentum: Downtempo” will have a mellower vibe and feature live music from local bands Fifth Fret, Erik the Viking, and R.e.A.L. On Saturday, “Momentum: Full Speed” will offer a louder, faster-paced experience with music from Em and the Mother Superiors, Wurly Birds and Kali Ra.

“Momentum” continues with free gallery hours from 5 to 7 p.m. March 5-7.

More than 200 artists submitted in excess of 500 works of art for this year’s exhibition. The curators selected 57 artists and 76 pieces, Karper said.

“As always, it’s a wide variety of media. We have sculpture and painting and photography. We do have a performance piece that’s interactive,” she said. “There’s some jewelry and some printmaking. Just a little bit of everything.”

In addition, three artists — Kaney, Erin Latham of Norman and Zachary Presley of Durant — received “Momentum” Spotlight commissions of $2,000 and three months of guidance from the show’s curators to create works specifically for the exhibit.

Zachary Presley of Durant is one of the three 2013 "Momentum" Spotlight artists.

Spotlight trio

Latham’s immersive installation will transport viewers far from Oklahoma City; she is creating an underwater sea kelp forest from printed and meticulously hand-cut recycled paper. In contrast, Presley, who is of Chickasaw heritage, is planning a performance piece that deals with an issue very present in Oklahoma: how toys and consumer goods marketed as “authentic cultural relics” actually bolster stereotypes associated with American Indians.

“One of the things that I love the most about ‘Momentum’ is that you just never really know what to expect because young artists are doing a lot of experimenting and taking a lot of risks,” Karper said.

For Kaney, who is a fine art major and computer science minor, his “Momentum” Spotlight project is his by far his most ambitious artistic endeavor to date.

“There’s nothing fundamentally different about deciding to work with computers vs. working with paint. Just with both cases, you really need to sort of fall in love with your medium. You need to really understand it and know what it can do and be willing to sort of push it in directions that you think maybe it can be experimented with,” he said.

“It feels really substantial. It feels like, OK, I’ve done something kind of important here.”

Oklahoma City artist Amanda Bradway's "Homo Sacrious, The Last Stand," made from a plastic skull with metallic gold spray paint and glitter card stock, is featured in the Oklahoma Visual Arts Coalition's 2013 "Momentum" exhibition.

ACM@UCO master class with Guns N’ Roses guitarist Richard Fortus postponed to Wednesday

RICHARD FORTUS

Hopefully for the last time, the Academy of Contemporary Music at the University of Central Oklahoma (ACM@UCO) has rescheduled its free, public master class with guitarist Richard Fortus.

The master class has been postponed to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the ACM@UCO Performance Lab, 329 E Sheridan in Oklahoma City’s Bricktown district.

The master class was originally scheduled for Feb. 21 and then moved to Monday because of inclement weather. On Monday, UCO closed its campuses early and canceled all evening events because of the threat of more wintry weather.

“The Richard Fortus Masterclass has been rescheduled for Wednesday, February 27th, barring any further antics from the Oklahoma weather system,” according to the ACM@UCO Facebook page.  The master class is free and open to the public.

Fortus joined legendary rock band Guns N’ Roses in 2001 and recorded on the band’s “Chinese Democracy” album. He regularly collaborates with other artists, performing or recording, including Rihanna, Enrique Iglesias, Thin Lizzy, The Psychedelic Furs, Fiona Apple, The Crystal Method, Jesse Malin, ‘N Sync and many more.

He’s also collaborated extensively with electronic artist and composer BT on various scoring projects for TV commercials, movie trailers, and video games.

Fortus is the latest in an impressive list of musicians and industry leaders who have visited the ACM@UCO. Past guests include Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Jackson Browne; Roger Daltrey, lead singer of The Who; singer-songwriter Ben Folds; Warner Bros. Records President Livia Tortella; Grammy-nominated producer Greg Kurstin; singer-songwriter Simon Townshend; blues guitarist Joe Bonamassa; and Flaming Lips’ Steven Drozd.

Based on the successful model from the original ACM in Guilford, England, the ACM@UCO is an innovative music program unlike any other in the U.S., offering an industry-based, “real world” educational experience for those interested in a career in contemporary music.

From its location in downtown Oklahoma City’s Bricktown district, the ACM@UCO offers two-year associate degree programs in bass, drums, guitar, keyboard, music business, music production and vocals, with the option to pursue a Bachelor of Applied Technology degree.

To learn more about the ACM@UCO, go to www.acm-uco.com or www.facebook.com/ACM.UCO.
