Daniel Day-Lewis stars in “Lincoln.”

The Golden Globe nominations were announced today, with Steven Spielberg’s Civil War saga “Lincoln” leading the field with seven nods, including best drama.

Other contenders in the best drama category include Ben Affleck’s Iran hostage-crisis thriller “Argo”; Quentin Tarantino’s slave-turned-bounty-hunter tale “Django Unchained”; Ang Lee’s 3-D shipwreck adventure “Life of Pi”; and Kathryn Bigelow’s Osama bin Laden manhunt story “Zero Dark Thirty.”

In the best comedy or musical film category, the nominees are Tom Hooper’s big-screen adaptation of “Les Misérables,” John Madden’s British retirees romp “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel,” Wes Anderson’s coming-of-age tale “Moonrise Kingdom,” David O. Russell’s mental-illness rom-com “Silver Linings Playbook” and the biggest surprise nominee, the quirky love story “Salmon Fishing in the Yemen.”

Along with “Lincoln,” the top film nominees include “Django Unchained” and “Argo,” which each earned a total of five nominations. “Les Misérables,” “Silver Linings Playbook” and “Zero Dark Thirty” received four apiece. “Life of Pi” and “Salmon Fishing in the Yemen” got three.

In the television categories, AMC’s “Breaking Bad,” HBO’s “Boardwalk Empire” and “The Newsroom,” ITV/PBS’ “Downton Abbey: Season 2″ and Showtime’s “Homeland” are nominated for best drama series. Notice the big four broadcast networks were shut out of the drama category.

Not so in the best comedy or musical TV category. The nominees are CBS’ “The Big Bang Theory,” ABC’s “Modern Family,” NBC’s “Smash,” HBO’s “Girls” and Showtime’s “Episodes.”

The Globes are Hollywood’s second-highest honors after the Academy Awards, whose nominations come out Jan. 10, three days before the Globe ceremony, according to the Associated Press. There’s always plenty of nominations overlap between the two, notes the Associated Press.

The 70th annual Golden Globe Awards will be Jan. 13, 2013 in Beverly Hills and broadcast on NBC. Tina Fey (“30 Rock”) and Amy Poehler (“Parks and Recreation”) will co-host the star-studded ceremony.
