George Strait’s “Cowboy Rides Away Tour” sells out Oklahoma City, other dates

George Strait’s “The Cowboy Rides Away Tour” featuring special guest Martina McBride was so popular when tickets went on sale Friday morning that six tour markets sold out within the first few hours, including Oklahoma City.
In Lubbock, Texas, the opening show of the King of Country Music’s farewell tour sold all 15,431 tickets within just 15 minutes, according to a news release.
“I never expected the fans would react like this. It’s just incredible,” said an ecstatic Strait in the release. “I really do have the best fans in the world, and I’m looking forward to seeing you all on the road very soon.”
In addition to Lubbock and Oklahoma City, sold-out cities include St. Paul, Minn., Albuquerque, N.M., Las Vegas, Nev., and Las Cruces, N.M. In select markets, remaining single show tickets are still available for purchase.
As previously reported, the beloved singer, who turned 60 in May, revealed the first 20 dates of his 2013-14 farewell tour in a press conference last month at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum in Nashville, Tenn. Among the 2013 dates will be a Jan. 19 show at Oklahoma City’s Chesapeake Energy Arena.
The Country Music Hall of Famer has racked up records and accolades since his 1981 debut single “Unwound” became a top 10 hit. So far, he has scored 59 No. 1 songs, earned more than 60 major industry awards and sold more than 65 million albums. He is the only artist in music history to achieve at least one top 10 hit each year during his 30-year career, according to a news release.
Strait said last month he plans to keep recording new music and play select dates around the country at the end of “The Cowboy Rides Away Tour.”
