Today’s featured event:
Hear “The Voice” Season 2 finalist Tony Lucca at 8 tonight at the Blue Door, 2805 N McKinley. Doors will open at 7 p.m. Gabe Dixon will open the show.
His success on the hit reality TV singing contest has helped Lucca reinvent his career, the musician told me in an August interview.
“It was unlike everything I’ve ever experienced, probably unlike anything I will ever experience. It was a great deal of fun and an extremely exciting thing, albeit with its ups and downs, you know,” Lucca said with a chuckle by phone from his hometown of Detroit.
“I went into it with the hopes of getting some additional exposure — a little boost to my career so to speak — but what we tapped into while I was there musically was kind of like a reinvention of my entire creative direction.”
Last month, Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine, who was Lucca’s coach on “The Voice,” announced he was signing the singer-songwriter to his 222 Records. Lucca is due to release his first album on the label next year.
“It boiled down to the advice I was given from Adam, which was know when to take risks, know when to take a good, calculated risk. I can honestly say that’s probably the sparkplug that my career was probably lacking, more or less. Maybe I had been playing a little too safe for a little too long,” Lucca told me in that summer interview.
“It’s been sort of my goal to take what I tapped into on the show and build from it. Now that I’ve gotten into writing songs for the new project, it’s like ‘Well, what kind of follow-up album would I make to my appearance on ‘The Voice’?”
