Three country superstars with Oklahoma ties will be vying for fan-voted glory next month during the 40th annual American Music Awards.
Checotah native Carrie Underwood earned two nominations, including Favorite Female Artist – Country. Her competition in the category includes Tishomingo resident Miranda Lambert and Taylor Swift.
Underwood also is up for Favorite Album – Country for her 2012 release “Blown Away,” along with Luke Bryan’s “tailgates & tanlines” and Lionel Richie’s duets record “Tuskegee,” which features Tishomingo resident Blake Shelton and Rascal Flatts.
Rascal Flatts, which features Picher-bred guitarist Joe Don Rooney, is nominated for Favorite Band, Duo or Group – Country, along with Lady Antebellum and Zac Brown Band.
Pop and reality TV star Christina Aguilera (“The Voice”) announced the AMA nominations today.
Nicki Minaj and Rihanna lead this year’s AMA nominees with four nods each. Drake, Justin Bieber, Maroon 5, One Direction and Usher earned three nominations each. Underwood, Chris Brown, fun., Gotye, J.Cole, Katy Perry, Kelly Clarkson, Luke Bryan and Pitbull each collected two nominations.
The 2012 Artist of the Year nominees are Justin Bieber, Drake, Maroon 5, Katy Perry and Rihanna.
This year also marks the creation of the new Electronic Dance Music Category. Nominees include David Guetta, Calvin Harris and Skrillex.
For the sixth year, winners will be determined by online voting that starts today. Fans can vote at www.amavote.com as well as AMA.abc.com.
The American Music Awards will be passed out Nov. 18 at Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles and broadcast live on ABC.
