Video: “Avengers” Blu-ray trailer
Walt Disney Studios released a trailer today hyping the Sept. 25 Blu-ray release of the No. 3 top-grossing film of all time: “The Avengers.”
Written and directed by Joss Whedon, “The Avengers” opened May 4 in the U.S. and promptly smashed box office records worldwide, grossing almost $1.5 billion to date and ranking as the third highest-grossing film of all time, both worldwide and domestic, according to The Hollywood Reporter. During the month of May, Avengers sales accounted for 52 percent of the total earnings at the North American box office with $532.5 million in receipts.
As previously reported, the movie this week crossed the $600 million domestic box office threshold. That means Whedon is just the second director to have a film cross the $600 million domestic milestone. No. 1 and 2 on the domestic box office all-time list “Avatar” and “Titanic,” respectively. Both were directed by James Cameron.
Naturally, the trailer promises “The Avengers” release will be “the biggest Blu-ray event of all time.”
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Blu-ray will include an audio commentary by Whedon, deleted scenes, featurettes, Disney Second Screen, Soundgarden’s “Live to Rise” music video and the Marvel One-Shots short film “Item 47.”
“The Avengers” also will be a part of a 10-disc box set titled “Marvel Cinematic Universe: Phase One – Avengers Assembled,” which will include all of the previous films in the “Marvel Cinematic Universe”: “Iron Man” and “Iron Man 2,” “Thor,” “Captain America: First Avenger” and “The Incredible Hulk.”
“The Avengers” stars Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark/Iron Man, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Chris Evans as Steve Rogers/Captain America, Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow, Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner/The Hulk, Jeremy Renner as Clint Barton/Hawkeye, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury and Tom Hiddleston as Loki.

After thousands of auditions from some of the best dancers in the nation, the judges of “So You Think You Can Dance” announced Wednesday the top 20 finalists who will compete to be named America’s Favorite Male and Female Dancer.
This season’s top 20 finalists:
Girls – Alexa Anderson, Lindsay Arnold, Witney Carson, Audrey Case, Janaya French, Eliana Girard, Amber Jackson, Janelle Issis, Amelia Lowe and Tiffany Maher;
Boys – Daniel Baker, Nick Bloxsom-Carter, Cole Horibe, Matthew Kazmierczak, Dareian Kujawa, George Lawrence II, Brandon Mitchell, Cyrus Spencer, Will Thomas and Chehon Wespi-Tschopp.
In two weeks, on Wednesday, July 11, the top 20 finalists will dance for the judges and America on this season’s first two-hour live performance show. Flaming Lips’ Wayne Coyne to receive Plaza District Association’s 2012 Urban Pioneer Award

The Plaza District Association has announced that Wayne and Michelle Coyne are the recipients of the 2012 Urban Pioneer Award. Wayne Coyne, lead singer of The Flaming Lips, and Michelle Martin-Coyne, an acclaimed photographer, have paved the way for creativity in Oklahoma City and brought the international spotlight to our state, according to the news release.
After growing up in the Classen Ten Penn neighborhood just two blocks from the Plaza District, the Coynes purchased their current home there in 1980s. Over the years, they’ve not only seen the decline of the neighborhood, but they’ve also experienced it. Today, they are celebrating the Plaza District’s rise as a center for creativity and entrepreneurship in Oklahoma City.
“The neighborhood had gotten pretty bad. Years ago, there came a time when we had to sit down and decide if we were going to stay,” said Michelle Coyne in the release. And staying is exactly what they did.
“Staying and believing in this neighborhood, the Coynes deserve this recognition just as much as any developer, philanthropist or visionary. The Coynes are a symbol of our city’s entire generation of urban pioneers who have chosen to stay and defend the good of their neighborhoods,” said Plaza District Executive Director Kristen Vails in the release.
However, a neighborhood doesn’t thrive by its people just living there, it thrives by the community its neighbors create. They may be internationally known artists, but to neighborhood kids, the couple is known most for their spooky, out-of-this-world decorations on Halloween. Michelle makes sure her elderly neighbors are doing well, and they both frequent Plaza District events, always taking time to chat with starstruck kids and local artists, according to the release.
Even outside the neighborhood, the Coynes are making sure Oklahoma City continues to thrive. Michelle Coyne volunteers on the MAPS 3 Parks Advisory board, and the couple is working to re-open the Womb Gallery, bringing international attention to the arts in Oklahoma City. Whether at the forefront, or behind the scenes, the couple is working to progress the role of art and creativity in Oklahoma City, according to the release.
The 16th Street Plaza District has undergone a remarkable transformation over the last several years. As arts and culture continue to grow in Oklahoma City, the Plaza District is providing opportunities for new creative spaces, local businesses and engaging events focused on the arts.
To celebrate these achievements, each year the Plaza District hosts the Urban Pioneer Awards to recognize those individuals who have been instrumental in the rebirth of our inner city – “Urban Pioneers” who have made the Plaza District and Oklahoma City the vibrant and creative community it is today.
The Coynes join an impressive list of past Urban Pioneer honorees including Tom McDaniel, Lou Kerr, Meg Salyer, Mark Funke, Mike Turpen, Ann Simank, Steve Mason and Bill and Bob Ross, according to the release.
The Coynes were selected as the 2012 Urban Pioneer Award winners by a group of past honorees and Plaza District board members including Tom McDaniel, Lou Kerr, Meg Salyer, Steve Mason, Aimee Ahpeatone and Stephen Kovash.
The 2012 Urban Pioneer Awards honoring Wayne and Michelle will be Wednesday, Aug. 1 at the Skirvin Hilton Hotel Grand Ballroom. For tickets and information, go to www.plazadistrict.org/upa.

O Music Awards
Oklahoma City-based psychedelic rockers The Flaming Lips set a new Guinness World Record tonight for most concerts in 24 hours in different cities.
They set the record with 20 minutes to spare, according to a Guinness representative. Posted above is the video of the Lips receiving the award.
The Lips played eight shows across the Mississippi Delta in 24 hours, surpassing Jay-Z’s previous Guinness Book of World Records mark of seven shows in a 24-hour time frame.
Lips drummer Kliph Scurlock tweeted “8 down, 0 to go. #SuperSuckItHova,” taking a playful jab at Jay-Z. (He also tweeted “The whole #SuckItHova hashtag is just some fun trash talking, like them kids do with those sports games.”
As previously reported, the Lips’ frenzied journey through the Mississippi Delta was part of MTV’s third edition of the O Music Awards, a digitally driven event recognizing artists, fans and innovators within the digital music culture. They started their quest at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday in Memphis, Tenn., and finished in New Orleans.
The trek was live-streamed at www.OMusicAwards.com as part of the awards. You can also find video clips of previous performances and oddball moments on the fast-paced tour there, and I’ve posted a few favorites here as well:

I’d like to dedicate “The Star Wars That I Used to Know,” Teddie Films’ clever parody clip of Gotye’s now-ubiquitous “Somebody That I Used to Know” video, to all the dedicated “Star Wars” fans out there who tired of George Lucas messing with their favorite childhood films (yes, I’m looking at you, Mr. BAM).

Oklahoma City-based psychedelic rockers The Flaming Lips just finished up the sixth show of their planned eight shows in a 24-hour period, an attempt to break the Jay-Z’s Guinness Book of World Records mark of seven shows in a 24-hour time frame.
The Lips are 17 hours in and a few moments ago finished playing with Phantogram a trippy rendition of The Police’s “Invisible Sun” that even frontman Wayne Coyne called weird. They’re wrapped up the Biloxi, Miss., show with a little “Race for the Prize,” the obvious theme for this attempt at record-breaking glory, as they get ready to head on to Baton Rouge, La.

What to do in Oklahoma on June 28, 2012: See “Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey: Fully Charged” at Chesapeake Energy Arena

Today’s featured event:
See “Fully Charged,” the new surge of circus entertainment from Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey featuring breathtaking dare-devilry, superhuman stunts and never-before-seen performances, as it begins its Oklahoma City run at 7:30 tonight at Chesapeake Energy Arena, 100 W Reno.
Performances continue 7:30 p.m. Friday, 3:30 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday.
Billed as “the most electrifying edition ever of Ringling Bros.,” “Fully Charged” celebrates the “performance power” that boosts circus-goers’ excitement. The amazing acts, which can only be seen at The Greatest Show On Earth, include Tabayara, a dynamic animal trainer whose rare ability to communicate with animals allows him to ride rearing stallions at a fully-charged gallop and orchestrate majestic 4-ton Asian elephants in a symphony of dance. When he stands inside a cage, eye-to-eye with 12 ferocious tigers, Tabayara sees family where others see danger.
The fearless Fernandez Brothers dial up the thrills as they perform daring feats of athleticism on the Twin Turbines of Steel, including extreme jumps and twists inside the moving wheels. Audiences will crackle with excitement as they watch Guillermo perform a 360-degree, flying-forward somersault, three stories in the air, a feat so difficult it has only been attempted by one other person in the 141-year history of Ringling Bros.
Descending from the legendary dynasty of Ghengis Khan, the Mongolian strongman duo of The Titanic Tulga and Mighty Meetal, demonstrate a herculean display of human dexterity and strength as they lift large, cumbersome telephone poles, which weigh up to half a ton, and twirl them above their heads while acrobats balance atop.
The Human Fuse, Brian Miser, sets the arena sky ablaze as he rockets through the air from his self-made human crossbow. Don’t blink as he flashes across the sky in less than a second, and travels 80 feet at 65 miles per hour.
Ever wonder how many clowns it takes to change a light bulb? The hilarious hoopla continues to flow as the clowns from the world-famous Ringling Bros. Clown Alley, charge up the audiences’ funny bones with hysterical silly antics and clownish comedy.

Flaming Lips begin whirlwind 24-hour tour tonight, talk Twitter feud with Erykah Badu
Let the “Race for the Prize” begin!
Oklahoma City-based psychedelic rockers The Flaming Lips will launch an attempt at the Guinness World Records mark for most live shows in 24 hours, playing eight concerts between Memphis, Tenn., and New Orleans tonight and Thursday.
As previously reported, the Lips’ race to break Jay-Z’s record of seven shows in one day is part of the MTV’s third installment of its O Music Awards, which is a digitally driven event that recognizes artists, fans and innovators within the digital music culture. The band’s frenzied journey will be live-streamed at www.OMusicAwards.com as part of the awards, which are being billed as the world’s first 24-hour live-streamed awards show.
The O Music Awards III and the Lips’ tour will both kick off at 6:30 p.m. Oklahoma time/7:30 p.m. Eastern time.
In addition, 24 awards will be given out in the course of the 24-hour show. Country hitmaker Blake Shelton (@blakeshelton), who lives in Tishomingo, and indie rock singer/songwriter/guitarist St. Vincent (@st_vincent), a Tulsa native, are both nominated in the Must Follow Artist on Twitter category.

The Flaming Lips
Along their rapid-fire trip through the Mississippi Delta, the Lips will meet up with a variety of opening acts, including Jackson Browne, Grace Potter & The Nocturnals, Gary Clarke Jr. and Hunter Hayes.
The Oklahoma rockers have been finalizing details and juggling schedules and logistics for what they hope will be their record-breaking trek.
“If you had to really consider all this in the beginning, you just simply wouldn’t want to do it,” Coyne told the Associated Press in a recent interview. “Luckily, it occurs to you when you get closer and closer. I think it’s a little bit like having a baby. At the beginning of it is a lot of fun, but by the time it’s here, really it’s too late to turn back.”
As the AP notes, that analogy isn’t too far off the mark when it comes to describing the Twitter feud between Coyne and Erykah Badu, who collaborated with the Lips on a cover of “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face” for their “Heady Fwends” Record Store Day album. (The album earned a wider release Tuesday.)
The relationship seemed to be going great until the Lips released the nudity-filled video for “The First Time I Ever Saw Your Face,” which the band eventually retracted after Badu accused the group of releasing it without her approval.
In the video Badu sits apparently naked in a tub, then later her sister Nayrok mucks about in a milky white substance and glitter. The disagreement spilled over on Twitter where Badu invited Coyne to kiss her “glittery” posterior and Coyne responded with a picture of himself with lips covered in glitter.
Coyne stopped short of saying Badu’s reaction was contrived, but told the AP she and her management certainly knew what was going down as they spent two days filming. He says her opinion changed when “easily riled” members of her audience objected.
“This is not her fault. It’s just the nature of the way Twitter works,” Coyne told the AP. “Her fans can just sometimes lash out and be as mean as they want to be, which I think is interesting. That’s the thing about Twitter — there’s no referee, you know.”
Coyne doesn’t believe anything else will come of the episode.
“Luckily I’m doing so many things I don’t have too much time to worry about it,” Coyne told the AP. “And a lot of people I run into now loved, loved that video and I think it’s true to what Erykah and I, in the beginning at least, thought we were going to show the world.”
The Lips will be joined on their record run by a number of musicians and celebrities, some performing along the way, some making appearances. Along with the live-stream online, MTV’s family of networks will offer live look-ins, according to the AP.
Recent additions to the lineup include Browne, who will ride the bus from Jackson, Miss., to Hattiesburg, Miss., where he will perform with the band, “Jackass” star Chris Pontius, Karmin and Neon Trees.
“It’s a logistics nightmare,” Coyne told the AP.
But it so like OKC’s beloved “Fearless Freaks” to try it. In honor of their quest, here is the itinerary from www.OMusicAwards.com:
