Oklahoma City-based psychedelic rockers The Flaming Lips just finished up the sixth show of their planned eight shows in a 24-hour period, an attempt to break the Jay-Z’s Guinness Book of World Records mark of seven shows in a 24-hour time frame.
The Lips are 17 hours in and a few moments ago finished playing with Phantogram a trippy rendition of The Police’s “Invisible Sun” that even frontman Wayne Coyne called weird. They’re wrapped up the Biloxi, Miss., show with a little “Race for the Prize,” the obvious theme for this attempt at record-breaking glory, as they get ready to head on to Baton Rouge, La.
As previously reported, the frenzied journey through the Mississippi Delta is part of MTV’s third edition of the O Music Awards, which is a digitally driven event that recognizes artists, fans and innovators within the digital music culture. They started their quest at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday in Memphis, Tenn., and plan to wrap tonight in New Orleans.
The trek is being live-streamed at www.OMusicAwards.com as part of the awards. You can also find video clips of previous performances on the fast-paced tour there, plus I’ve posted a few here for your enjoyment.
