Walt Disney Studios released a trailer today hyping the Sept. 25 Blu-ray release of the No. 3 top-grossing film of all time: “The Avengers.”
Written and directed by Joss Whedon, “The Avengers” opened May 4 in the U.S. and promptly smashed box office records worldwide, grossing almost $1.5 billion to date and ranking as the third highest-grossing film of all time, both worldwide and domestic, according to The Hollywood Reporter. During the month of May, Avengers sales accounted for 52 percent of the total earnings at the North American box office with $532.5 million in receipts.
As previously reported, the movie this week crossed the $600 million domestic box office threshold. That means Whedon is just the second director to have a film cross the $600 million domestic milestone. No. 1 and 2 on the domestic box office all-time list “Avatar” and “Titanic,” respectively. Both were directed by James Cameron.
Naturally, the trailer promises “The Avengers” release will be “the biggest Blu-ray event of all time.”
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Blu-ray will include an audio commentary by Whedon, deleted scenes, featurettes, Disney Second Screen, Soundgarden’s “Live to Rise” music video and the Marvel One-Shots short film “Item 47.”
“The Avengers” also will be a part of a 10-disc box set titled “Marvel Cinematic Universe: Phase One – Avengers Assembled,” which will include all of the previous films in the “Marvel Cinematic Universe”: “Iron Man” and “Iron Man 2,” “Thor,” “Captain America: First Avenger” and “The Incredible Hulk.”
“The Avengers” stars Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark/Iron Man, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Chris Evans as Steve Rogers/Captain America, Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow, Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner/The Hulk, Jeremy Renner as Clint Barton/Hawkeye, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury and Tom Hiddleston as Loki.
