“The Artist,” “The Descendants” win big at the Golden Globes

Since the Golden Globes were handed out Sunday in Beverly Hills, Calif., the consensus among the pundits has become clear: The Oscars are now a two-picture race between “The Artist” – which won the Globe for best picture, musical or comedy – and “The Descendants” – which won the final award of the night, best picture, drama.

That consensus becomes even louder since “The Descendants” star George Clooney won for best actor, drama, while “The Artist’s” Jean Dujardin – with the help of his adorable co-star and dog Uggie – won best actor, musical or comedy.

Of course, it’s necessary to take this notion of a two-movie race with the proverbial grain of salt, since award seasons watchers typically want to ramp up the Oscar drama by turning the competition into a battle of two favorites – and the more opposite the two films in question, the better. Remember last year when it was all about “The King’s Speech” vs. “The Social Network”? Or 2010 when it the battle of the exes between Kathryn Bigelow’s “The Hurt Locker” and James Cameron’s “Avatar”?

To me, “The Artist” seems to be the real best picture favorite going into this year’s Oscars; like “The King’s Speech,” it’s even achieved the obligatory Oscar backlash for being too Oscar-y. Since “The Artist” was my favorite film of 2011, I’m hopeful it will do well on Oscar night. But I’m also a big fan of the “The Descendants” – which narrowly missed my top 10 list, mostly because of the cloying voiceover in the first third or so of the movie – and particularly of its charming star.

My sense is that the 2012 Oscars may most closely mirror the 2009 Academy Awards, when “Slumdog Millionaire” earned eight statuettes, including best picture, but none of the acting prizes, which allowed the voters to spread the love to other movies.

The Oscars will air at 6 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 26 on ABC.
