Blake Shelton earns a leading five CMA Awards nominations
The Tishomingo resident tied with tour mate Brad Paisley, Jason Aldean and Taylor Swift as all received five nominations each. Miranda Lambert, Carrie Underwood, Thompson Square and Rascal Flatts also will represent Oklahoma as nominees at the Nov. 9 awards show.

Blake Shelton’s breakout year just keeps getting bigger.

The Ada native will compete for five trophies, including top prize entertainer of the year, when the Country Music Association’s 45th Annual CMA Awards are handed out in November.

Jake Owen and The Band Perry revealed a partial list of the nominees live from New York City on “Good Morning America” Tuesday. Shelton tied with tour mate Brad Paisley, Jason Aldean and Taylor Swift as all received five nominations each and all are nominated in the entertainer of the year category, along with Keith Urban.

The CMA Awards will air live from Nashville, Tenn., on Nov. 9 on ABC, with Paisley and Checotah native Carrie Underwood co-hosting the show for the fourth straight year. Other nominees with Oklahoma ties include Underwood, Miranda Lambert, Thompson Square and Rascal Flatts.

Along with his entertainer nomination, Shelton, who lives in Tishomingo, will defend his title as reigning CMA male vocalist of the year and contend for album of the year for “All About Tonight” and single of the year for “Honey Bee,” both produced by Clinton native Scott Hendricks. In addition, Shelton, a celebrity coach on the hit reality TV show “The Voice,” is nominated for video of the year for “Honey Bee,” directed by Trey Fanjoy.

It is Shelton’s first nomination for entertainer of the year.

“To be honest, I secretly hoped that I’d get this nomination one day, but I never thought I actually would,” Shelton said in a statement at BlakeShelton.com. “After 10 years of watching my friends receive this incredible honor, I got pretty used to being a cheerleader for them, ya know? I didn’t expect this today but I know I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for my band and crew. Most of them have been with me from the beginning of my career, and they are such a big part of why I get to do what I love.

Shelton’s wife and fellow Tishomingo country star Miranda Lambert will try to repeat as the CMA’s female vocalist of the year after winning the prize in 2010, Underwood will compete for the sixth time in the female vocalist category. Underwood won the title 2006, 2007 and 2008, and if the “American Idol” wins again in 2011, it will tie her with fellow nominee Martina McBride and fellow Oklahoma native Reba McEntire for most wins in this category.

Lambert also is nominated with country legend Loretta Lynn and rocker Sheryl Crow for musical event of the year for their version of Lynn’s signature song “Coal Miner’s Daughter.”

Husband-and-wife duo Thompson Square, which includes Miami, OK, native Keifer Thompson, helped announce some of the nominations from Nashville, and received two to cap a breakthrough year. The couple will compete for new artist and vocal duo of the year.

Trio Rascal Flatts, which includes Picher-bred guitarist Joe Don Rooney, earned a nomination in the vocal group of the year category.
