Shane Black to direct “Iron Man 3″

Marvel Studios is in final negotiations with Shane Black to direct “Iron Man 3,” which will reunite the “Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang” helmer with star Robert Downey Jr., according to Deadline.

“Iron Man” and “Iron Man 2″ director Jon Favreau decided to leave the successful franchise to helm the Disney adventure “Magic Kingdom,” creating an opening the in director’s seat.

Black is probably best known as a screenwriter. He penned “Lethal Weapon,” “Lethal Weapon 2″ and “The Last Boy Scout,” and he was one of the top action movie writers of the 1980s and ’90s.

But Deadline reports that it’s not clear whether Black will pen the “Iron Man 3″ script along with directing the sequel.

Downey must be thrilled to reunite with Black, who not only wrote “Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang” but also made his directorial debut with the action-comedy. The 2005 cult favorite helped reboot Downey’s career after his well-publicized struggles with substance abuse.

The writer-director has mostly been taking a break from the film biz since “Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang,” but if you’ll pardon the pun, it will be good to have Black back.

“Iron Man 3″ is due in theaters May 3, 2013.
