Fortune’s Fools to bring improvised Shakespeare to Oklahoma City stage

Oklahoma City’s burgeoning improv scene is about to get Shakespearean.

OKC Improv, which showcases improv comedy and theater, is offering the world premiere of Fortune’s Fools (Improv Resembling Shakespeare) with performances at 8 p.m. Saturday and Feb. 12 as part of a six-week run of shows taking place at 8 and 10 p.m. every Saturday through Feb. 12 at Ghostlight Theatre Club, 3110 N Walker.

Fortune’s Fools brings together some of Oklahoma City’s best actors and improvisers on one stage to create original stories and characters in the style of William Shakespeare. The new troupe is a co-production of OKC Improv and Oklahoma Shakespeare in the Park under the direction of J. Shane McClure. A respected actor, director, designer, and stage combat choreographer, McClure has helmed several Shakespeare productions for Oklahoma City Theatre Company, Carpenter Square, and Oklahoma Shakespeare in the Park, for which he has also acted in more than 30 roles. McClure is also a founder and current member of the metro’s longest-running improv troupe, Everybody and Their Dog.

The group also includes Sue Ellen Reiman, managing director of Oklahoma Shakespeare in the Park and a member of improv troupes Everybody and Their Dog and The MiDolls. Christopher Curtis has performed with Shakespeare in the Park, and along with fellow cast member Curt Coy, performs with the improv troupes Red Dirt Improv and C-4. Twin brothers Buck and Clint Vrazel are producers of and teachers for OKC Improv and are members of Twinprov, “Villain: The Musical,” The Ones Your Mother Warned You About, and Short Order Crooks.

Fortune’s Fools will be the first of many community co-productions that OKC Improv hopes to mount.

Since debuting on Dec. 4, 2009, OKC Improv has produced 66 shows with 37 different acts from Oklahoma City, Stillwater, Tulsa, Dallas, and Austin, Texas. By providing top quality education programs and frequent performance opportunities, OKC Improv has directly contributed to the growth of the Oklahoma improv scene. In the last year, the number of active performance groups in the metro has nearly quadrupled from five to 19 with the promise of more groups and projects to be developed during the course of the next year. The current 6-week run will include 18 different acts, three of which will be making their first appearance on the OKC Improv stage.

Show tickets are $10. Improv performers and students pay just $5. Admission is free for those celebrating birthdays. Many shows sell out, so reservations are strongly encouraged and can be made at okcimprov@gmail.com or by calling 343-1570.

OKC Improv also is offering weekly improv classes for adults with varying skill levels. Classes run through Feb. 12 at Ghostlight Theatre Club. The first class attended is free. Each additional class is $10.
