The White Stripes announce they’re breaking up

The groundbreaking rock duo The White Stripes announced today they are splitting up and “will make no further new recordings or perform live,” reports the Associated Press.

Jack White and Meg White say there are a “myriad of reasons” for the breakup, but the main reason is to “preserve what is beautiful and special about the band.”

The last recording by the White Stripes was the live album “Under the Great White Northern Lights,” released last year. The duo recently contributed their raucous rendition of Loretta Lynn’s “Rated X” to last year’s compilation “Coal Miner’s Daughter: A Tribute To Loretta Lynn.”

Over the years, Jack White has focused attention on other projects, including the bands the Dead Weather and the Raconteurs, as well as his Nashville, Tenn.-based Third Man Records. He also has produced albums for other artists, including Lynn’s acclaimed 2004 album “Van Lear Rose.”

He produced Oklahoma City rock legend Wanda Jackson’s new album “The Party Ain’t Over.” Last month, Jack White and his Third Man House Band performed with Jackson on “The Late Show With David Letterman” and “Conan” to promote the new album.
