Wednesday Video Spotlight: Wanda Jackson and Jack White on “Conan”
Oklahoma’s own Queen of Rockabilly Wanda Jackson continued her promotional tour for her new album “The Party Ain’t Over” Tuesday night with a performance and interview on “Conan.”
Rocker Jack White produced the album, and he and his Third Man House Band backed her on Conan O’Brien’s show Tuesday night, as well as on “The Late Show with David Letterman” last week. “The Party Ain’t Over” came out Tuesday on Nonesuch Records and White’s Third Man Records.
Rather than playing a song from the new album, Wanda, Jack and the awesome band performed the Maud native’s 1961 classic “Funnel of Love” on “Conan.” She may be 73, but Wanda again showed she’s still “the sweet lady with the nasty voice.”
While I counted myself a Coco fan before, I now positively adore him for the classy way he the First Lady of Rock ‘n’ Roll on his show.
“The Party Ain’t Over” features the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer performing an array of covers from Amy Winehouse and Bob Dylan to Kitty Wells and Jimmie Rodgers. Jackson, White and the band last week performed a rollicking cover of Johnny Kidd and the Pirates’ “Shakin’ All Over” from the album on Letterman.
A longtime Oklahoma City resident, Jackson will perform a free album release show at 8 p.m. Friday at the Academy of Contemporary Music at the University of Central Oklahoma’s Performance Lab, 323 E Sheridan in Bricktown. Doors will open at 7 p.m.
Green Corn Revival, the Weatherford band whose debut album “Say Your a Sinner” made my list of top albums of 2010, will open for and back Jackson during Friday’s ACM@UCO show.
The buzz surrounding the album has put Jackson back in the national and international spotlight. To read more about Jackson and her new album, click here to read The Oklahoman Entertainment Editor Gene Triplett’s excellent interview with her.
