Oklahoma’s own Queen of Rockabilly Wanda Jackson recently chatted with The Oklahoman Entertainment Editor Gene Triplett about working with rocker Jack White on her hotly anticipated new album “The Party Ain’t Over.”

The album, which the White Stripes frontman produced, is dropping Tuesday on Nonesuch Records and White’s Third Man Records.

To hear Jackson, 73, tell it, White gently but firmly shoved her out of her comfort zone for the album, which features an array of covers from Amy Winehouse and Bob Dylan to Kitty Wells and Jimmie Rodgers.

“And he began pushin’ me on this,” Jackson told Gene. “Especially one of the first songs we did; I think the second one we actually recorded together was the Amy Winehouse song, ‘You Know I’m No Good,’ which was my first single. But he had to keep pushin’ me and pushin’ me.

“And I mean, I welcome direction, always. And it’s been so long since anybody’s had the courage to actually direct me on singin’ a song,” the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer said. “They think they shouldn’t tell me what to do. But I’m an artist. I want to learn. But I was just getting a bit frustrated because I couldn’t seem to get what he wanted.”

Jackson, White and his Third Man House Band performed a rollicking cover of Johnny Kidd and the Pirates’ “Shakin’ All Over” from the album Thursday night on “The Late Show with David Letterman.” They will perform again Tuesday on “Conan”; Conan O’Brien’s late-night show starts at 10 p.m. on TBS.

Also, Jackson, a Maud native and longtime Oklahoma City resident, will perform a free album release show Jan. 28 at the Academy of Contemporary Music at the University of Central Oklahoma’s Performance Lab, 323 E Sheridan in Bricktown. Green Corn Revival, the Weatherford band whose debut album “Say Your a Sinner” made my list of top albums of 2010, will open for and back Jackson during the Jan. 28 ACM@UCO show.

The buzz surrounding the album has put Jackson back in the national and international spotlight.

“So I’m tellin’ ya, this is big time for an Oklahoma City girl,” she said.
