Videos: Wanda Jackson & Jack White and Miss Arkansas Alyse Eady on “Letterman”
A performance by Oklahoma’s own Queen of Rockabilly Wanda Jackson with Jack White and his Third Man House Band was definitely worth staying up late Thursday night to watch “The Late Show with David Letterman.”
Jackson and her cohorts were asked to perform on “The Late Show” in advance of her new album “The Party Ain’t Over,” which White produced. The album is dropping Tuesday on Nonesuch Records and White’s Third Man Records.
Jackson, White and Co. rocked Letterman’s world Thursday night with their smoking cover of Johnny Kidd and the Pirates’ “Shakin’ All Over.” Letterman could barely speak after their rollicking rendition came to and end, exclaiming “Holy crap! Whoa!” and asking them to resume playing to close of the show, which was running a little over.
The band was tight, White scorched his guitar solos and “The Sweet Lady with the Nasty Voice” proved she deserved the title of First Lady of Rock ‘n’ Roll. The Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, who in the 1960s was the first woman to ever sing rock ‘n’ roll, didn’t sing like a 73-year-old; she performed like a woman who still knows how to rock and knows it. The performance wasn’t perfect – I expect Wanda will look more at ease Tuesday night when she and band are the musical guests on “Conan,” which airs at 10 p.m. on TBS – but you just had to love the spirit and the sound of it. It was old-school rock ‘n’ roll done right.
Remember, Wanda also will be performing next Friday at the ACM@UCO Performance Lab in Bricktown. No, unfortunately, OKC doesn’t get Jack White along with Jackson, but excellent Weatherford band Green Corn Revival back her.
As an added bonus, I got the chance Thursday to finally see Miss Arkansas Alyse Eady perform her crazy-good ventriloquism/singing/yodeling act on “Letterman,” too.
