Miranda Lambert leads first round of CMA Award nominations

The first round of nominees in seven categories for the Country Music Association’s 44th Annual CMA Awards was announced today at the historic Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, Tenn., by Justin Moore and Chris Young.

Tishomingo resident Miranda Lambert, who leads the initial nominations with five nods, and Dierks Bentley will reveal the nominees for the remaining five categories Wednesday on ABC News’ “Good Morning America.”

The 44th Annual CMA Awards will be broadcast live from the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Wednesday, Nov. 10 on the ABC Television Network. The show will be hosted for the third time by Brad Paisley and Checotah native Carrie Underwood.

Lambert has already earned five nominations on the strength of two big hits, “The House That Built Me” and “White Liar.” Both are vying for single, video and song of the year. Sharing in the single of the year nomination are her producers, Frank Liddell and Mike Wrunke.

Nominated with Lambert in the video category are directors Trey Fanjoy for “The House That Built Me” and Chris Hickey “White Liar.” In the song of the year category, just for songwriters, Lambert is nominated for co-writing “White Liar” with Natalie Hemby. (“The House That Built Me” was written by Tom Douglas and Allen Shamblin.)

Lambert’s fiance and fellow Tishomingo resident Blake Shelton today earned two nominations for “Hillbilly Bone,” his chart-topping collaboration with Trace Adkins. Shelton and Adkins, along with producer Scott Hendricks, are nominated for single of the year for the raucous hit. They also are nominated alongside director Roman White for the song’s video.

Other nominees with Oklahoma ties announced today include Rascal Flatts, which includes Joe Don Rooney of Picher, nominated for vocal group of the year, and Brooks & Dunn, which features former Tulsan Ronnie Dunn, nominated for vocal duo of the year.

The announcement of the final nominees in seven of the 12 CMA Awards categories was made by Moore and Young from the stage of the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville in recognition of the Grand Ole Opry’s 85th anniversary. The Grand Ole Opry House has been undergoing major renovations following devastating floods in May and is scheduled to reopen Sept. 28.

The finalists in the remaining five categories — including biggies like entertainer, male vocalist and female vocalist — will be announced Wednesday morning on ABC News’ “Good Morning America.”

The 2009 CMA Awards, held in Nashville Nov. 11, ranked behind only the Academy Awards and Grammy Awards during the 2009-2010 season for awards shows among total viewers. With The 43rd Annual CMA Awards, ABC won the night in both total viewers (17.2 million) and adults 18-49 (5.3/14). According to Nielsen research, 35.8 million unique viewers ages 2+ watched six minutes or more of the program.

Box Office Report for August 27-29

As with most horror films, The Last Exorcism topped the box office in its opening weekend.  However, it was given a close run for its money by the new heist film Takers.  The only other “new” film this weekend was the special edition of Avatar, which despite a large promotional push landed outside of the top ten.

In the holdover movies, the Will Ferrell comedy The Other Guys  is about to cross $100 million.  Also, I may have announced Inception’s imminent exit from the top ten too soon when it hit number nine last week.  This week saw it bounce back up to the number seven spot; its haul is now over $270 million.

According to the IMDB, the top ten movies for this weekend:

1.)  The Last Exorcism  $21.3 million (New)

2.)  Takers  $21 million (New)

3.)  The Expendables  $9.5 million ($82 million)

4.)   Eat Pray Love  $7 million ($60.7 million)

5.)  The Other Guys  $6.6 million ($99.3million)

6.)  Vampires Suck  $5.3 million ($27.9 million)

7.)  Inception  $5.11 million ($271 million)

8.)  Nanny McPhee Returns  $4.74 million ($17 million)

9.)  The Switch  $4.66 million ($16.5 million)

10.)  Pirahna 3D  $4.31 million ($18.3 million)
