Photos: Day One of FreeTulsa!

The first day of FreeTulsa! had me missing the feeling of having thousands of people swarming the downtown streets of Tulsa like at DFest, but at least the local talent was there to play.

Mayola and BRONCHO easily were the festival’s highlights. Having only 30 minutes to put up their instruments, play a set and remove their equipment, these bands still managed to perform at a level that can be matched to national touring acts.

Incredible stuff.

Look out for more pictures from day two of the festival.

More American Idol Shakeups

American Idolhas had many changes on the judging panel recently with the departures of Paula Abdul and Simon Cowell and the additions of Ellen DeGeneres and Kara DioGuardi.  Well, the shakeups continue, as Ellen is leaving already.  Her anticipated replacement is none other than Jennifer Lopez, who has been a guest mentor on the show in the past.

There is also a rumor that Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler has been offered a judging slot.  If he accepts, chances are current judge Kara DioGuardi will be ousted.  It makes you appreciate reliable old Randy Jackson.

Friday Featured Track for July 30

Hey loyal readers, I heard this song in a commercial the other day and couldn’t believe that it is over ten years old.  As far as I’m concerned, the best thing to come out of the Latin explosion that occurred in music in the late nineties was the discovery of Carlos Santana by a new generation.

Today’s featured track, “Smooth,” was one of many collaborations he did for his Supernatural album, and in my opinion it was the best.  His glorious guitar work is on display in this song and so is the sexy vocal work of Matchbox 2o alum Rob Thomas.  Check out the video.

Maury Chaykin Dead at 61

Canadian actor Maury Chaykin lived to see 61, but just barely.  He passed away on his birthday in Toronto.  He was an accomplished actor with over 150 credits in his career, which spanned television and movies.  American audiences would probably be most familiar with his work in such films as Dances with Wolves and My Cousin Vinnyor, more recently, with his role on HBO’s series Entourage.  BAM’s blogs sends their condolences to his family.

Rifftrax Live Contest

As I have previously posted here, there will be another Rifftrax Live event broadcast into theaters around the state next month.  The movie receiving the Rifftrax treatment this time around will be Reefer Madness, and the guys at Rifftrax want your help.  They are running a contest on their website wherein they provide people with a few clips from the movie and allow viewers to submit their own jokes.  The winners will receive a prize and will have their names put on the screen when their jokes are used at the Riffrax Live event.
