Michael Scott wishes to resign as The Office boss

This weekend, Steve Carell reaffirmed his desire to fulfill his NBC contract for one final season as his best-loved character, The Office‘s semi-lovable idiot boss, Michael Scott.

In memoriam, I’ve compiled my five personal favorite Michael Scott lines from the show’s hilarious six-year run. (more…)

Kristen Stewart Relishes the Long-Term Joys of Playing Bella Swan in “Twilight: Eclipse”

Few actors get a chance to play one character over the course of five or more feature films — that is a club usually reserved for men playing James Bond or members of the “Harry Potter” cast. But Kristen Stewart joined that exclusive club when it was announced this spring that the final installment of Stephenie Meyer’s “Twilight” saga, “Breaking Dawn” would be cleaved in two.

So over the course of four years and five films, the sizeable audience for Meyer’s books will strongly identify Stewart with Bella Swan, much as Daniel Radcliffe has grown to be many readers’ primary image of The Boy Who Lived. Stewart, speaking during a press day for “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” at Los Angeles’ Four Seasons Hotel, characterized her unusual position as a genuine gift.

“This is a really unique situation,” Stewart said, leaning on the banquet table in front of her as she considered the impact of her casting. “I get to play her for a really long time and that’s also a serious indulgence and something that’s really lucky because I feel really sad when I lose a character at the end of a short shoot, which is typically six weeks on a small movie, which is what I’m used to. It’s definitely, obviously the one role that’s put me in this sort of epic position.

Trailer: ‘The Social Network’

Overwrought much? It’s not like the world needed another reason to take Facebook way too seriously.

“The Social Network,” directed by David Fincher, written by Aaron Sorkin and starring Jesse Eisenberg, opens in theaters Oct. 1. Can its pedigree overcome the fact that it’s a movie about Facebook?

Video: Ashlee Madison Jazz in June Tribute

Friends of Ashlee Madison gathered Thursday to rehearse for a Jazz in June memorial concert, and I thought it would be a good chance to not only film local music but also get some insight into Madison.

She died in April shortly before she was supposed to perform with Oklahoma rapper Jabee at the 2010 Norman Music Festival. I had never seen her perform, but her voice was something special.

Staff Writer Jane Cannon wrote a story previewing the Saturday performance.

Woody Allen feels he’s squandered his career

In a typically self-deprecating interview with The Times in London, Woody Allen reveals that he feels he’s pretty much wasted his career despite having total artistic freedom.

Out of 40 films I should have 30 masterpieces, eight noble failures and two embarrassments, but it hasn’t worked out that way.

Allen says he’s no Bergman, Fellini or Buñuel — and he’s right — but he seems to have forgotten some of the things he’s accomplished. Picking his favorite six of his films, Allen lists “Purple Rose of Cairo,” “Match Point,” “Bullets Over Broadway,” “Zelig,” “Husbands and Wives” and “Vicky Cristina Barcelona.”

That’s right. No “Manhattan.” No “Annie Hall.” No mid-career masterpieces “Hannah and Her Sisters” or “Crimes and Misdemeanors,” of which “Match Point” is merely an inferior shadow. And “Vicky Cristina Barcelona”? Come on, even Woody’s attempt at a musical, “Everyone Says I Love You,” is better.

Incidentally, my six favorite Woody Allen films are:
1. “Annie Hall”
2. “Hannah and Her Sisters”
3. “Radio Days”
4. “Manhattan”
5. “Zelig”
6. “Crimes and Misdemeanors”

Box Office Report for Weekend of June 25-27

This weekend at the box office brought some familiar results.  Pixar continued its dominance, as Toy Story 3 became its fastest film ever to $200 million.  Adam Sandler’s new film Grown Ups had a respectable opening, while Tom Cruise continued to have problems getting people into theaters with his new film Knight and Day.  Still, it could be worse, as was demonstrated by the new comic book film Jonah Hex.  It’s only in its second weekend in theaters and it’s already on its way out of the top ten (with less than $10 million made).

The box office totals for June 25-27, courtesy of IMDB:

1.) Toy Story 3  $59 million ($227 million)

2.) Grown Ups  $41 million ($41 million)

3.) Knight and Day  $20.5 million ($27.8 million)

4.) The Karate Kid  $15.4 million ($136 million)

5.) The A-Team  $6 million ($62.8 million)

6.) Get Him to the Greek  $3.01 million ($54.5 million)

7.) Shrek Forever After  $2.88 million ($229 million)

8.) Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time  $2.8 million ($86.2 million)

9.) Killers  $2 million ($44 million)

10.) Jonah Hex  $1.6 million ($9.14 million)
