OKC Improv launches third run Saturday with several new acts

The MiDolls
OKC Improv, Oklahoma’s first ongoing showcase for regional improv comedy and theater, begins its third run Saturday, with shows at 8 and 10 p.m. at Ghostlight Theatre Club, 3110 N Walker.
The run will continue with weekly shows through July 31. Tickets are $10 each. Reservations are encouraged and can be made via e-mail at okcimprov@gmail.com or by calling 343-1570. For more information, go to www.okcimprov.com.
OKC Improv’s first two runs wowed audiences and critics by showcasing a broad spectrum of talent from across the region. In addition to returning favorites like OKC’s own dyanmic duo of comedy, Twinprov, the improvised music theater extravaganza “Villain: The Musical” (recently returned from a buzzworthy performance in Dallas), and the hit all-female troupe, The MiDolls, three new metro troupes will be making their debut during the summer run.
OKC’s Stretchin’ It will perform their mix of raunchy improv and sketch comedy as part of a blue show intended for adult audiences only at 10 p.m. July 10. Awkward Pause, made up of performers trained at University of Central Oklahoma by Sue Ellen Reiman of Everybody and Their Dog and The MiDolls, will open. Also made up of performers from Reiman’s class, two-man group Improv-ing The World, will make its debut on June 26.
At 8 p.m. June 10, OKC Improv will host two out-of-state troupes that specialize in the Harold long-form, Gangs of Recess from Fort Worth, Texas, and the Dallas Comedy House-based FIAD. July 17 will bring yet another Dallas long-form group, The Hindenburgs, performing a variation of the Armando.
The upcoming run will also include performances from some of OKC’s best stand-up comedians, including Brad Porter, Spencer Hicks, and James Nghiem, along with a preview of magician William Rader’s new mentalism show, set to debut this fall.
The run will close out with a new Twinprov show: “String Theory.” Based on suggestions from the audience, twin brothers Buck and Clint Vrazel will continue to blur the lines between comedy, theater and music, accompanied by keyboardist Stephanie Bidelspach and special guest violinist Nicole Melki.
In addition to performances, OKC Improv also will launch two Saturday afternoon classes for beginning and intermediate improvisers to be taught by the Vrazels, who have become rising stars on the national improv scene. The Vrazels have been performing and teaching improv comedy for 10 years and can be seen at shows and festivals around the country with Twinprov, “Villain: The Musical” and The Ones Your Mother Warned You About.
Classes will be taugh at Ghostlight Theatre Club and will begin Saturday, continuing through August 7 with a performances during the July 31 show. The first class is free. Subsequent classes will be $10 each.
The Level 1 class is geared toward beginners, lapsed improvisers, and actors and comedians looking to try something new and will cover the basics of storytelling, stagecraft, character work, mime, improv structures, and group mind. The Level 2 class is aimed at experienced improvisers looking to refine their skills and will cover the further development of improv fundamentals, advanced character and scene work, and strategies for excelling in different kinds of improv. To sign up, call 343-1570 or e-mail okcimprov@gmail.com.
OKC Improv’s classes are part of a larger educational initiative at Ghostlight Theatre Club that will also include acting classes and workshops covering different aspects of theater production.
