The BOK Center is projected to mark a monumental milestone Saturday at the Tulsa Oilers’ matchup with Missouri. The Tulsa venue will be recognizing the arena’s 1 millionth patron to attend an event since the arena opened in September 2008.
The lucky patron will be given an array of prizes in commemoration of this event, including a suite at a Tulsa Oilers game next season, concert T-shirts and other memorabilia, according to a news release.
“It’s wonderful that we are able to reach this milestone after opening only 18 months ago,” said BOK Center General Manager John Bolton in the release. “We are rewarding this special fan as a tribute to all of the people who have attended events at the arena.”
Also this week, the BOK Center, managed SMG, was nominated by the Academy of Country Music for venue of the year. To be considered for this award, the venue must have bought or promoted at least five country concerts during the prior calendar year (Jan. 1-Dec. 31, 2009) and be in good standing with all agents.
Since opening in September 2008, the BOK Center has hosted several country artists, including Checotah native Carrie Underwood, band Rascal Flatts, which includes Joe Don Rooney of Picher, and George Strait with Chockie’s own Reba McEntire. Other country stars to play the BOK Center include Kenny Chesney, Brad Paisley, Trace Adkins, Keith Urban with Sugarland, Taylor Swift and Alan Jackson.
Venue of the year is an off-camera award presented at the annual ACM Honors event, which will take place in Nashville, Tenn. The award is considered a part of the 45th Annual Academy of Country Music Awards and will be voted on by the professional membership of the academy.
The BOK Center will be competing for the award against the following venues:
· Meadowbrook U.S. Cellular Pavilion – Gilford, N.H.
· Sommet Center – Nashville.
· Sprint Center – Kansas City, Mo.
· Time Warner Cable Music Pavilion – Raleigh, N.C.
