Winning music for Olympic ice skating routines examined

The 2010 Winter Olympics are underway in Vancouver, British Columbia, and airing on NBC and its sister channels.

In honor of one of the winter games’ most popular events, Fine Arts Editor Rick Rogers has examined some of the musical choices of past medal winners in the ice skating and ice dancing competitions.

Citing the Web site skatemusiclist.com, Rick notes that music from Bizet’s opera “Carmen” is the hands-down favorite among ice skaters, having figured prominently in 50 Olympic routines over the years. Running close behind are Tchaikovsky’s “Swan Lake,” Rachmaninoff’s Second and Third Piano Concertos, Lecuona’s “Malaguena” and Minkus’ “Don Quixote.”

Olympic ice skating selections range from from orchestral masterworks and ballet music to Broadway show tunes and movie themes.

The story looks back at the music used by medalists Brian Boitano, Viktor Petrenko, Michelle Kwan, Katarina Witt and more.
