Oklahoma City-born actress Suzy Amis Cameron, wife of Oscar-nominated director James Cameron, will be wearing a “green” dress on the Academy Awards red carpet.
Jillian Granz, a Michigan State University student, submitted the winning design for the “Red Carpet Green Dress” contest, Amis Cameron announced today.
The contest was launched in December 2009 to benefit MUSE Elementary, a nonprofit school in Topanga, California, which Amis Cameron founded with her sister, Rebecca Amis, and for which she serves as the school’s creative visionary. “Red Carpet Green Dress” provided entrants from around the globe a unique opportunity design an environmentally conscious red-carpet dress and have it showcased during one of the world’s most viewed events.
Granz’s design will be unveiled at the annual Global Green Pre-Oscar Party, co-hosted by Amis Cameron and her Academy Award-winning producer, director and husband. Granz’s dress will be worn by Amis Cameron to the 82nd Annual Academy Awards celebration, where she will attend with her husband in honor of his best director and best picture nominations for “Avatar,” the highest-grossing film of all time.
The Oscars will air March 7 on ABC.
“I was impressed by the creativity and diversity of designs that came in from around the world for the ‘Red Carpet Green Dress’ contest,” Amis Cameron said in a news release. “Jillian’s design really stood out because it was highly creative and inventive in its use of sustainable materials. This is exactly the message we want to send to young designers and a message we care about MUSE. The process of watching Jillian and Deb bring the design to life over the next few weeks will be exciting.”
Granz, an apparel and textile design senior at Michigan State University, will be brought to Los Angeles to consult with Academy Award-winning costume designer Deborah Scott, who will bring the dress to life. She will also accompany Amis Cameron to the Global Green Pre-Oscar Party for the unveiling.
“In this industry, fashions come and go quickly, which means clothing usually gets thrown away rather than recycled, “ said Granz in the release. “I think a stronger focus on sustainable design is necessary; and I’m happy I can help promote sustainability through this contest. I’m also extremely happy that ‘Red Carpet Green Dress’ will benefit MUSE because it’s really important to teach young kids to take care of the earth.”
MUSE Elementary and Global Green’s shared vision of educating our children to be globally and environmentally informed makes the partnership a natural fit. Whether through “Red Carpet Green Dress” or their Global Program, MUSE Elementary is dedicated to providing young people around the world a sustainable future and cultural appreciation that brings the concept of compassionate global citizenry to life. Global Green’s National Green Schools Initiative is protecting our most precious natural resource – our children – by helping create green schools in Los Angeles, New Orleans and across the country.
“We are excited to collaborate with Suzy and James Cameron – and MUSE Elementary – through Global Green’s annual Pre-Oscar party,” said Global Green President and CEO Matt Peterson in the release. “This partnership will raise awareness about not just green lifestyle options like eco-fashion, but also the importance of creating healthy, green schools for children that improves learning, saves money and helps slow global warning.”
Amis Cameron developed “Red Carpet Green Dress” to stimulate global green education and raise funds for MUSE Elementary. “Red Carpet Green Dress,” an annual contest, provides the opportunity for amateur designers to create a formal cocktail dress made of natural/organic or sustainable materials while also encouraging these future designers to estimate carbon footprints when creating their clothing lines. Designs in this inaugural year were submitted by entrants from around the globe, including United States of America, Australia, Spain and Italy.
