BAM Column: Oklahoman Nick Waters learning from watching 30 chick flicks in 30 days

“Atonement” has been one of Nick Waters’ favorite films so far in his mission to watch 30 chick flicks in 30 days before Valentine’s Day.

Movie mission rolls on

Neither the power-zapping ice storm nor cheesy rom-com moments have deterred Pauls Valley resident Nick Waters (pictured below) from his mission to watch 30 chick flicks in 30 days.

“I have relearned so many things during this as it pertains to trust, communication, love and what it means to work for a marriage versus just being in a marriage,” he said. “Life is an adventure and if you can pursue that adventure with someone you love, it makes it even more memorable.”

Since Jan. 15, Waters has been viewing a recent film a day through his project “30 Chick Flicks in 30 Days: One Guy’s Exploration of Romance Through Movies Loved by Women.” People from 10 different countries have visited www.30chickflicks.com or www.Twitter.com/30chickflicks to comment on his reviews of the films, all movies he hadn’t seen before.

For Waters, 28, the project has inspired him “to live every day of my life as if it were a love story being played out in a movie.”

“I don’t necessarily want some of the things that I’ve seen in the films,” he said. “But what I do want is I want to be passionate, I want to be compassionate, I want to be giving, I want to be forgiving.”

As of last week, he and his wife of seven years, Nicci, had watched every film together, with guests occasionally joining them. They invited pals to their special pre-game screening of “Australia” on Super Bowl Sunday.

“It’s been fun to get her perspective … as a spouse and also as a woman,” he said. “If nothing else happens, we’ve had some fun conversations.”

His favorites so far include the romantic comedy “My Life in Ruins,” the first one that made him choke back tears, and the acclaimed drama “Atonement,” with its shocking twist. The couple had to take an intermission during “Atonement” when last month’s ice storm caused them to lose power for a couple of hours.

While he hasn’t hated any of the movies, the shallow story, superficial characters and predictable dialogue in the rom-com “The Other End of the Line” made him wince. Cringe-worthy moments aside, Waters isn’t impatient to reach the end of the line of his movie marathon.

“I’m actually not looking forward to it being over because of how much fun it’s been.”
