OKC Improv, Oklahoma’s first ongoing professional improv showcase featuring local and regional improv comedy and theater, opened its inaugural seven-week run on last Saturday to sold-out shows. The first night also earned a rave review from Elizabeth Hurd in The Oklahoman; she declared “OKC Improv puts Oklahoma City on the map for comedy, stand-up or ROTFLOL (rolling on the floor laughing out loud)” and  that “Professional quality improvisation is not for the faint of heart. But anyone who likes a little irreverent humor will appreciate one of these hilarious shows.” Read her full review here.

OKC Improv’s current run continues every Saturday night through Feb. 27 with two shows each night at 8 and 10 p.m. at at Ghostlight Theatre Club, 3110 N Walker, and will feature a variety of improv acts from across the state along with the occasional special guest.

This week’s 8 p.m. show includes the debut of OKC Improv All-Stars, featuring some of the best improvisers in the metro performing together in all new combinations, and Improv Festival Oklahoma producers, Red Dirt Improv, described as “edgy,” and “quick quippers with a flair for the understated,” by Hurd. She continued, “Alternating longer skits with shorter skits, Red Dirt Improv allows the comedic talent of each performer to develop and connect with the audience. Musical accompanist Stephanie Bidelspach punctuates the witty repartee perfectly.”

At 10 p.m., William Rader, one of Oklahoma’s premier close-up magicians makes his debut on the OKC Improv stage, followed by the debut of the three-week run of The Closers, an OKC troupe that specializes in creating improvised plays in the style of writer David Mamet (“Glengarry Glen Ross,” “The Untouchables”).

Other troupes scheduled to perform during the seven-week run include OKC’s Everybody and Their Dog, The Ones Your Mother Warned You About and Twinprov, Norman’s O.U. Improv, Stillwater’s Ham Wallet and Cueless, and Tulsa’s Crayons.

According to Janet Patterson of The Edmond Sun, “Ghostlight Theatre Club’s intimate atmosphere, with its small stage and cash bar, is a perfect setting for the unabashed adult entertainment OKC Improv provides. At $10 per ticket, it’s affordable, interactive and an interesting alternative to traditional scripted theater.”

In late February, utilizing their 10 years of improv expertise, OKC Improv co-founders Buck and Clint Vrazel will teach the first of many OKC Improv workshops and classes. Check www.okcimprov.com for more information.

OKC Improv will be dark in March during Ghostlight Theater Club’s production of “The Real Thing,” but will return with a five-week run starting in April. OKC Improv is produced in conjunction with Ghostlight Theatre Club by Marcy Fleming, Buck Vrazel, Clint Vrazel, and Eric Webb for Mirror Image Productions.
