BAM Column: Oklahoma man taking on 30 chick flicks in 30 days

Katherine Heigl and Oklahoma native James Marsden star in the 2008 romantic comedy “27 Dresses,” one of the films suggested for Nick Waters’ project “30 Chick Flicks in 30 Days: One Guy’s Exploration of Romance Through Movies Loved by Women.” Waters will announce the 30 films he will view in 30 days later this month.

Take chick flicks dare
Pauls Valley resident Nick Waters has resolved for 2010 to learn more about women, and he has devised a sweeping cinematic project to reach that goal.
Waters, 28, has titled his mission “30 Chick Flicks in 30 Days: One Guy’s Exploration of Romance Through Movies Loved by Women.” He plans to watch a chick flick a day for a month; as he goes, he will write and post videos about the films and his experiences at www.30chickflicks.com.
“The question that I’m trying to answer … is how far would you go to understand the opposite sex?” said Waters (pictured at left), who works in freelance communications.
He plans to start the movie marathon Jan. 15 and finish it Feb. 13, the day before Valentine’s Day. His wife of seven years, Nicci, helped come up with the initial idea and will view most of the movies with him.
“I truly am in a fun way hoping that I’ll gain insight into the feminine gender through chick flicks,” he said. “There will be some dialogue there between she and I.”
He also hopes to converse with online followers about the films. He is asking women and men to recommend movies on his Web site and on Twitter @30chickflicks. To ensure the movies reflect a modern viewpoint, he is considering films from 2007 to present; he will watch most of the movies at home on DVD but may see a few new flicks in the theater.
He already has received suggestions from across the U.S. as well as from Canada, Britain, Indonesia and Jamaica.
Only films he hasn’t seen before will be tapped. Waters will choose five of the movies; his wife, mother and mother-in-law will pick 10; and he will cull 15 from online submissions. He will release the full schedule at the start of the marathon and invite followers to take the 30 Chick Flick Challenge with him.
He has deliberately left the definition of “chick flick” open to interpretation. Suggested films so far include the rom-com “27 Dresses,” the weepie “My Sister’s Keeper” and the musical “Mamma Mia!”
“I don’t just want to watch these movies. I want to really glean something from them that I can hopefully walk away from and say ‘OK, this made me a better person or made me a better husband.’”
