“Wizard of Oz” returning to theaters tonight

The cinematic classic “The Wizard of Oz” is returning to movie theaters at 7 tonight for a one-night-only event.
“The Wizard of Oz 70th Anniversary Hi-Def Event” will be shown in the Oklahoma City area at AMC Quail Springs 24, Cinemark Tinseltown USA and Norman’s Spotlight 14, according to www.MovieTickets.com.
With the special screenings, Warner Bros. will show off the technologically updated and improved version of the 1939 film before of its Sept. 29 release on Blu-ray Hi-Def.
For many fans of the film favorite, tonight’s showing will be the first chance to see “The Wizard of Oz” on the big screen since its last national theatrical release in 1955. Warner Bros. is promising the new digitally sharpened version of the film will offer details that filmgoers couldn’t see in past prints.
Based on L. Frank Baum’s 1900 children’s book, “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz,” the film stars Judy Garland as Dorothy Gale, Billie Burke as Glinda the Good Witch and Margaret Hamilton as the Wicked Witch of the West. The movie won two Oscars, for best music and best original song for “Over the Rainbow,” and was nominated for four more, including best picture.
