Toby Keith to receive songwriter of the decade honors

The Nashville Songwriters Association International will present its Songwriter/Artist of the Decade (2000-09) award to Oklahoma star Toby Keith for his hits ranging from “Courtesy Of The Red, White And Blue (The Angry American)” and “Who’s Your Daddy?” to “As Good As I Once Was” and “God Love Her.”
Keith, a past two-time consecutive Academy of Country Music Entertainer of the Year award winner, will receive the Songwriter/Artist of the Decade honor at the Nashville Songwriters Association International annual Songwriter Achievement Awards Oct. 18.
The awards are part of the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame Foundation evening, according to a news release from Keith’s publicist.
The association also will present the 2009 Songwriter of the Year, Songwriter/Artist of the Year and Song of the Year awards, along with the 10 Songs I Wish I’d Written. These honors are chosen by ballots from the organization’s professional songwriter members and will be revealed that night.
The group will also give the will also proudly present the Songwriter of the Decade (2000-09) honor to Craig Wiseman for his songs such as “The Good Stuff,” recorded by Kenny Chesney and winner of the 2003 ACM song of the year; “Believe,” by Brooks & Dunn (which includes former Tulsan Ronnie Dunn) and winner of the 2006 Country Music Association song of the year’; and the hits “Summertime,” recorded by Kenny Chesney, and “Live Like You Were Dying,” recorded by Tim McGraw.
“These awards are very special honors, not only recognizing continuous hits over the past 10 years, but because they are chosen by fellow songwriters,” said Nashville Songwriters Association International Executive Director Bart Herbison. “Craig and Toby have truly earned the respect of their fellow creators and deserve this special recognition.”
The Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame Foundation’s 39th anniversary dinner takes place Oct. 18 at the Renaissance Hotel, 611 Commerce Street in downtown Nashville.
The foundation will induct songwriters Kye Fleming, Mark D. Sanders and late country music icon Tammy Wynette into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame. The AT&T-sponsored event will celebrate the musical contributions of the newest inductees through star-studded performances of some of their biggest hits.
