What to do in Oklahoma on Sept. 1, 2009

Today’s featured event:
See if you can catch a glimpse of the new okapi calf at the Oklahoma City Zoo, 2101 NE 50.
Officials announced last week that a rare okapi was born Aug. 15 at the zoo. The baby is one of fewer than 100 okapis in captivity in accredited zoos nationwide, and the hoofed animals can be seen at only 24 zoos in the country.
The African animals that are most closely related to giraffes. Okapis have dark-colored bodies and white stripes on their legs. About 10,000 of the forest-dwelling animals are believed to exist in the wild.
The okapi has been my favorite animal since grade school, when I found a book about them in my local library. I read that book over and over.
According to The Oklahoman’s Carrie Coppernoll, the baby okapi may hide inside initially, visitors can still see the zoo’s other three okapis.

I love okapis, and to see a baby okapi is an amazing treat! Of course this is just one of many reasons to go see the Oklahoma City Zoo — truly one of the best zoos in the USA.
