British actors Samantha Morton (a two-time Oscar nominee, for “In America” and “Sweet and Lowdown”), Dominic West (TV’s “The Wire,” “300″) and Polly Walker (HBO’s “Rome”) have joined the cast of “John Carter of Mars,” according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The long-awaited film adaptation of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ venerable book series will be helmed by “WALL-E” and “Finding Nemo” writer-director Andrew Stanton. The Oscar winner will be making his first foray into live-action fare with “John Carter of Mars.” The film will be made under the Disney banner rather than for Pixar.

The trio of Brits join Taylor Kitsch (“X-Men Origins: Wolverine”), Lynn Collins (“Wolverine”) and Willem Dafoe (“Spider-Man”). The film follows Civil War veteran John Carter (Kitsch) who is mysteriously transported to Mars and gets involved with the planet’s warring people. He also finds love with Martian Princess Dejah Thoris (Collins).

Morton will play Sola, the daughter of Dafoe’s Tars Tarkas, a leader of the Tharks who is one of John Carter’s allies in the story. According to the trade publication, Sola ”must hide her softer side from her warmongering race,” the Tharks.

Walker will play the merciless Thark Sarkoja.

West, who was so memorable as an evil politician in “300,” will play Sab Than, prince of the Zodangans, who believes he should rule Mars.
