Governor declares Sir Paul McCartney Day in Oklahoma

The legendary Paul McCartney, who is in Tulsa to perform a concert and celebrate the BOK Center’s one-year anniversary, is to receive an official proclamation from Gov. Brad Henry declaring today Sir Paul McCartney Day in the state of Oklahoma, according to a news release from the venue.”Whereas, Paul McCartney is a genuine living legend, among the most successful recording artists in history of popular music, as his enormous contributions to music through The Beatles, Wings and his solo career have been justly celebrated worldwide” is stated in an excerpt of the proclamation.
Henry says in the release, “Over five decades, Sir Paul McCartney has given us some of the greatest and most memorable pop music of all time. He is truly a living legend whose impact on music and popular culture is incalculable. Tulsa and the entire state of Oklahoma are honored by his visit.”
Tulsa Mayor Kathy Taylor has been a long-time supporter of downtown and the BOK Center. In a collaborative effort, she and the governor decided that this day should be documented in the history books as a celebration for the entire state of Oklahoma, not just Tulsa, according to the release.
“For generations, from the Beatles to Wings to his solo career, Paul McCartney’s music has reached across time and space to touch us all,” said Taylor in the news release. “It is fitting that this icon in popular music celebrate with us as we mark the first year anniversary in the BOK Center, a venue that will entertain generations to come. We are honored to have Sir Paul McCartney in Tulsa, and glad to be the host on this special day.”
McCartney will perform a sold-out show tonight at the BOK Center. It is the only arena stop on his 2009 stadium tour. The concert begins the celebration of the BOK Center’s one-year anniversary since opening with the Eagles on Sept. 6, 2008.
