Natalie Portman has been added to Marvel Studios’ film adaptation of the “Thor” comics, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Portman, a comic-book movie veteran from “V for Vendetta,” will play Jane Foster, who in the comic’s early days was a nurse who became Thor’s first love. The trade publication reports that the character will be updated to a “doctor-scientist type” for the film.

Filming is set to begin early next year, and the movie will be released in 2011. Brit Kenneth Branagh is directing. Chris Hemsworth (“Star Trek) will play Thor. British actor Tom Hiddleston will play Loki, the god of mischief who is the movie’s villain.

This follows last week’s big DC Comics news that Ryan Reynolds has been cast as the lead in Warner Bros.’ movie version of “Green Lantern.”

According to Variety, Reynolds beat out Bradley Cooper and Jared Leto for the coveted role. Reynolds is another comic-book movie vet: He played Deadpool in this summer’s “X-Men Origins: Wolverine.” Fox already has started developing a Deadpool spin-off based on the popularity of “Wolverine” and Reynolds’ turn as the mutant, according to the trade publication.

Production on the “Green Lantern” film is expected to start around January. Martin Campbell (2006′s successful James Bond reboot “Casino Royale”) will direct.

Our resident comics expert Matt Price gauges the reaction to Reynolds’ casting over at his blog, Nerdage. Click here to see what people are saying about the casting, which sounds promising to me. But that could just be my girlish reaction to Ryan Reynold’s abs talking.
