Box office report

Michael Bay’s ginormous blockbuster “Transformers” sequel narrowly battled past animated dinosaurs and mammoths of the third “Ice Age” film over the July 4 weekend box office.
Paramount’s “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” thundered through the Fourth of July weekend to No. 1 for the second weekend in a row with $42.4 million, according to the Associated Press.

Close behind in second place was 20th Century Fox’s “Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs,” which rumbled to $41.6 million over the holiday weekend.
The box-office takes for the two blockbusters were so close that the distributors on Sunday reported them as tied for No. 1, according to the AP.
With a $293.5 million domestic total after just 12 days, “Transformers” blasted past Disney/Pixar’s ”Up” to become the year’s highest-grossing movie.

But “Up” soared to its own milestone: Its $6.6 million weekend take boosted its domestic total to $264.9 million, passing “The Incredibles” ($261.4 million) to become No. 2 on the Disney/Pixar hit list behind “Finding Nemo” ($339.7 million).
The third “Ice Age” film, as expected, packed in the family crowds.

Universal’s gangster pic “Public Enemies,” starring Johnny Depp and Christian Bale, debuted at No. 3 with a respectable $26.2 million.
