“No! Not a remake of ‘An American Werewolf in London!’”

Dimension Films is developing a remake of the 1981 cult classic comic-horror film “An American Werewolf in London,” Variety.com is reporting.

The original movie was written and directed by John Landis, and it’s incredible werewolf transformation sequences won Rick Baker an Oscar for best makeup.

In fact, because of ”Werewolf,” makeup and industry technological contributions first became recognized by the Academy Awards in 1981. Baker won the first ever Academy Award bestowed on a special effects artist.

The transformation scenes also caught the eye of Michael Jackson, who tapped Landis to helm his iconic music videos for “Thriller” and “Black or White.”

The ’80s film is known for its unusual soundtrack, too. Rather than typical horror tracks, it includes such tuneful song choices as Van Morrison’s “Moondance,” Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Bad Moon Rising” and Bobby Vinton’s “Blue Moon.” (Surprisingly, Warren Zevon’s “Werewolves of London” isn’t on the soundtrack.)

In the original, David Naughton and Griffin Dunne star as American tourists backpacking through England when they encounter a werewolf on the moors. Naughton’s character is mauled and turned into a werewolf himself; Dunne’s character is killed and becomes a gruesome ghost who haunts his friend.

No writer, director or actors have been attached to the “Werewolf” remake. Producing brothers Sean and Bryan Furst, who produced “Daybreakers,” a movie about a world conquered by vampires set for January release, according to Variety.

I’m a huge fan of “An American Werewolf in London,” and to me, this seems like a completely unnecessary remake. Even in this era of high-tech special effects, those Oscar-winning transformation sequences still hold up – and horrify.
