Rascal Flatts, Brad Paisley, Taylor Swift among 2009 CMT Music Award winners

Rascal Flatts takes honor at CMT Music Awards

Rascal Flatts took home the belt buckle trophy for group video of the year at Tuesday night’s 2009 CMT Music Awards.

The trio, which includes Joe Don Rooney of Picher, earned two nominations in the category, winning with their soaring hit “Every Day.”

“Country music has the best fans,” declared bassist Jay DeMarcus.

Winners were determined through fan votes, and fans lavished devotion on Brad Paisley and Taylor Swift. Paisley won three awards: male video of the year for “Waitin’ on a Woman,” collaborative video with Keith Urban for “Start a Band,” and performance of the year for “Country Boy” with Alan Jackson, George Strait and Dierks Bentley.

Swift won the top prize, video of the year, and female video of the year with “Love Story.” The 19-year-old star was featured in the show’s opening skit with rapper T-Pain and in the closing performance, a duet with rockers Def Leppard.

The show aired live from the Sommet Center in Nashville, Tenn., but featured many stars from outside the country ranks.

The B-52s performed their ’80s hit “Love Shack” with fellow Georgians Sugarland, who won duo video of the year. Kid Rock earned the Wide Open Country Video award, given to an artist outside mainstream country, with his hit “All Summer Long.” T-Pain returned to present an award with Oklahoman Toby Keith.

Zac Brown Band won the USA Weekend Breakthrough Video prize for “Chicken Fried.”

Oklahomans Toby Keith, Carrie Underwood, Miranda Lambert, Brooks & Dunn and Reba McEntire were nominated for awards but were shut out at the ceremony.
