Oklahoma museums offer exhibits in conjunction with Red Earth Festival

Museums help celebrate Red Earth
Several Oklahoma City area museums and art galleries are giving people a chance to see even more American Indian art during this weekend’s Red Earth Festival.Three metro museums are showing special exhibits of American Indian art and artifacts:
- Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art: “Spirit Red: Visions of Native American Artists from the Rennard Strickland Collection” features paintings, baskets, pottery and more from acclaimed 20th century artists. The exhibit is on view through Sept. 13 at the museum, 555 Elm Ave., Norman. Information: www.ou.edu/fjjma.
- Sam Noble Oklahoma Museum of Natural History: “One Hundred Summers: A Kiowa Calendar Record” showcases 200 hand-drawn illustrations by celebrated Kiowa artist and calendar-keeper Silver Horn. The exhibit runs through Aug. 23 at the museum, 2401 Chautauqua Ave., Norman. Information: www.snomnh.ou.edu.
- Oklahoma History Center: “Unconquered: Allan Houser and the Legacy of One Apache Family” continues through July at the center, 2401 N Laird Ave. Spanning five generations of the Houser/Haozous family, it includes more than 80 pieces of sculpture, art and artifacts. In addition, the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum, 1700 NE 63, is exhibiting American Indian art and artifacts from its permanent collections. Information: www.nationalcowboymuseum.com.
And Tribes 131 Gallery, 131 24 Ave. NW in Norman, is showing beadwork, pottery and more from 30 American Indian artists, including Red Earth Honored One Jereldine Redcorn. The opening reception will be from 6 to 9 tonight, with extended gallery hours of 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday. Information: www.tribes131.com.
