Friday Featured Track

The song that has been in my head the most this week:
- “Augustine,” Vienna Teng, from her 2009 album “Inland Territory.”
This song is one of the more rock-oriented tracks on California-born singer/songwriter/pianist Vienna Teng’s fourth album. I’ve been listening to “Inland Territory” often over the past week as I’m planning to review it for you guys soon. (I’ve been alternating between Teng and Eli Young Band, with a bit of Randy Rogers Band and some random Beatles for color. Weird mix, but that’s what the circumstances called for this week.)
I’m a fan of Teng, who is kind of a throwback – in a good way, in my opinion – of the female singer-songwriter boom of the 1990s. While she calls to mind the Sarah McLachlan/Shawn Colvin/et al sensibility of the ’90s, her music still sounds fresh and open.
This track features a jangling piano and the punctuating cry of an electric guitar along with Teng’s angelic vocals and articulate lyrics. Once it got into my ears, the song wormed its way into my brain, and while it’s playing, it holds me captive until abruptly fading. And I’m perfectly OK with that.
