Food Network’s “DDD” makes Oklahoma stop at Mama E’s
My family and I decided to take in a late Saturday lunch at Mama E’s soul food restaurant here in Oklahoma City. We went there on the recommendation of a pal, The Oklahoman/NewsOK’s Food Dude Dave Cathey, but also timed our midday meal with the arrival of a Food Network film crew.
The crew was there shooting footage for an upcoming episode of one of our family’s favorite shows, “Diners, Drive-ins and Dives.”
We got there just in time: The crew filmed us ordering at the counter and later interviewed us about the food and shot us while we ate.
As Dave promised, Mama E’s serves up terrific Southern soul food, and we were served huge portions. I had some of the best fried catfish I’ve ever eaten, along with breaded, fried and gravy-smothered ribs, creamy mac and cheese, jalapeno-spiked black-eyed peas and delicious collard greens. Yum! You can’t beat that on a dreary, cold Saturday. (Though Oklahoma is finally starting to show its sunny side out there now.)
Those ribs were really amazing, but I think it’s hilarious that I was filmed for television while noshing one of the messiest foods I have ever eaten in public.
Unfortunately, “DDD” host Guy Fieri wasn’t at Mama E’s today, but he is coming to town. The crew said he will be at Mama E’s Tuesday to do his part of the episode. Maybe we’ll get the chance to see and/or meet him then.
The crew also will be shooting Monday in Okarche at Eischen’s Bar, home of the best fried chicken and okra in the state. But the Eischen’s shoot is for a viewer’s choice episode, so only people who wrote in to recommend the bar for the show will be permitted to attend.
