Disney/Pixar’s “Up” opens Cannes Film Festival

Film Pixar's Up

The 62nd Cannes Film Festival opened today with a screening of the new Disney/Pixar animated film “Up.” It is the first animated film to open the venerable fest, according to the Associated Press.

The film also is the first Pixar feature to be released in 3-D, so 3-D glasses accessorized tuxes and gowns on the red carpet. It is Pixar’s 10th feature, and judging from the early buzz, it will be the studio’s 10th straight hit, which is just mindboggling.

Here is the IMDB plot summary for the film: By tying thousands of balloon to his home, 78-year-old Carl Fredricksen (voice of Ed Asner) sets out to fulfill his lifelong dream to see the wilds of South America. Right after lifting off, however, he learns he isn’t alone on his journey, since Russell (Jordan Nagai), a wilderness explorer 70 years his junior, has inadvertently become a stowaway on the trip.

Pixar also will be honored at another big European film festival this year. According to IMDB, the newly created 3-D versions of “Toy Story” and “Toy Story 2″ will be screened first at the 66th annual Venice Film Festival in September.

Venice organizers said the festival also will present a lifetime achievement award to John Lasseter and the Pixar directors. Organizers said for the “first time in the history of the Venice Film Festival, the award will honor not only the achievement of a single filmmaker but also the contribution of the directors of a visionary studio.”

“Up” opens May 29 in theaters, and I personally can’t wait to see it.

I can’t wait to see this movie either and I’m sure my 4 1/2 year old will enjoy it too. I had seen the preview and liked very much what I saw, has an interesting story and would like seeing their South American perspective since I’m from there.

How did she manage to scure the loan in the first place – $24m is a lot of money!
