Box office report

Wolverine clawed his way to the top of the box office over the weekend, but it turns out his cut is a bit thinner than originally predicted.
“X-Men Origins: Wolverine” took in $85.1 million over opening weekend, the Associated Press reported today, citing final studio numbers. That was almost $2 million less than 20th Century Fox projected on Sunday.
A film’s final box office take often differs from earlier projections, because Sunday figures are based on estimates of attendance for that day.
Based on final figures, “Wolverine” now ranks as the third-biggest opening weekend in the four-film “X-Men” franchise. It came in a few hundred thousand dollars behind the second movie, “X2: X-Men United,” and about $18 million behind the third one, “X-Men: The Last Stand.” It did far overtook the $54.5 million opening weekend of the first “X-Men” movie.

“Ghosts of Girlfriends Past,” the annual start-of-summer rom-com counterprogramming, opened with $15.4 million to come in No. 2 on the box office charts.
The other wide opening, the 3-D animated “Battle for Terra,” featuring the voice of Oklahoman James Garner, opened at No. 12 with $1.1 million.
Last week’s No. 1 film, “Obsessed,” was in the third spot with another $12.1 million for a total of $46.9 millon.
